Men’s Hockey: Ohio State Loses Series Opener to Lake Superior State, 7-3 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s hockey team scored 14 seconds into its game vs. Lake Superior State Friday night, but the Lakers responded with two goals in the next 6:06 to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 7-3 victory in Value City Arena Friday. The Buckeyes cut the Laker lead to one to end both the first and second periods, but could not get the tying goal. The Lakers scored three goals in the third for the final.
The teams will close out the two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at 8:05 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena. Ohio State now is 0-2-1 on the year (0-2-1-1 CCHA). Lake Superior State is 1-1-1 (1-0-0-0 CCHA).
The Buckeyes’ goal 14 seconds into the game came following freshman Zac Dalpe’s win on the opening faceoff. He got the puck to sophomore transfer Hunter Bishop, who beat the LSSU goalie high. It was the first goal for Bishop as a Buckeye, while Dalpe had his first collegiate point. The Lakers responded at 4:02 on Chad Nehring’s tally, followed by Fred Cassiana’s goal at 6:20. Nathan Perkovich put LSSU up 3-1 with a tip-in on the power play at 9:18. Buckeye sophomore captain Peter Boyd followed with a power-play goal of his own at 18:35, taking a cross-ice feed from sophomore John Albert, with sophomore Chris Reed picking up the second assist on the play. The Lakers outshot the Buckeyes in the period, 14-9. LSSU was 1-for-3 on the power play in the period, and Ohio State was 1-for-2.
The teams traded goals in the second period to go into intermission with LSSU ahead, 4-3. Dan Barczuk scored at 11:27 for the Lakers, with senior Corey Elkins scoring for Ohio State at 16:54, assisted by sophomore Patrick Schafer and senior Nick Biondo. There was just one penalty called in the period, with Ohio State scoreless on the power-play chance. Ohio State put 16 shots on net, with LSSU taking 10 shots on goal.
Lake Superior State scored twice in the first 1:58 of the third frame. Nehring added his second goal of the game 27 seconds into the stanza and Cassiani posted his second tally of the night at 1:58. Perkovich closed out the scoring with a power-play goal at 14:44. The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers in the period, 15-13. Ohio State did not score on four power-play chances. LSSU was 1-for-3, with the Buckeyes holding the Lakers scoreless on a 5-on-3 for 1:22.
In the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 40-37. Ohio State junior goalie Joseph Palmer started the game and played the first 31:27 and took the loss, allowing four goals on 20 shots. Dustin Carlson replaced Palmer at 11:27 of the second period. He saw 10:31 in net and gave up two goals, while making four saves. Freshman Cal Heeter saw his first collegiate action, closing out the final 18:02 and making 10 saves while giving up one power-play goal.
The Buckeyes were 1-for-7 with the man advantage. Lake Superior State was 3-for-6.

Albert has at least one assist in each game this season. He has a team-best four assists and five points on the year.
Elkins has goals in back-to-back games and Biondo has an assist in the last two games.
Todd Rudasill and Corey Toy saw their first action of the season.
