W Soccer: Ohio State Drops 2-0 Game to Michigan – Ohio State Buckeyes
10/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio After a scoreless first half in which Ohio State controlled play and held all the statistical advantages, Michigan came out the aggressors in the second half, scored two goals in the first 15 minutes and held on for a 2-0 win over the Buckeyes. The win in Ann Arbor improved UM’s record to 4-7-4 overall and 1-3-1 in the Big Ten while Ohio State falls to 6-6-2 overall and 3-2-0 in the Big Ten.
For the second consecutive game the Buckeyes’ second-half effort did not match the intensity of their home-standing opponents. Michigan sent three shots toward the Ohio State goal in the first nine minutes of the second half before Katie Miler tallied off an assist from Kristen Goncalves in the 54th minute. It was Miler’s first goal of the season.
At that point coach Lori Walker inserted freshman keeper Katie Baumgardner into the goal, replacing junior Lauren Robertson, who has played every minute in goal for the past two seasons.
Baumgardner was called upon to make a save just 68 seconds into her collegiate debut, off a shot by Clare Stachel. She couldn’t handle a pass into the box four minutes later though, and Amanda Bowery hit the open net with her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Stachel.
The Buckeyes tried to overcome the two-goal deficit. Ashley Bowyer, who led the team with four shots, including two on goal, had shot attempts in the 64th and 66th minutes, respectively. Courtney Jenkins, Brooke Taylor, Ali Schwach and Bowyer all had shots in the next 12 minutes as the Buckeyes kept the pressure on.
Then in the last two minutes of the game Paige Maxwell and Lisa Collison sent attempts wide.
Ohio State ended up with a 15-13 advantage in shots, but Michigan held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Ohio State also had a season-high 19 fouls compared to 11 for the Wolverines.
Individually, Collison and Maxwell had three shots apiece in support of Bowyer’s four. Collison, Taylor and Genna Brand had the Buckeyes’ other shots on goal.
The Buckeyes, who are 5-2-2 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in 2008, return home for their final two home games of the season this week. At 7:30 p.m. Friday the team takes on Iowa and at 1 p.m. Sunday Ohio State hosts Iowa. Seniors Caitlin Colfer, Lisa Collison and Amy Graeff will be honored prior to the Iowa game.
