Men’s Hockey: Buckeyes and Miami Set for Rematch in Oxford After Shootout to Open Year – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s hockey team travels to Oxford, Ohio, to close out a home-and-home series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. Ohio State and Miami opened Central Collegiate Hockey Association play with the first shootout in league history. The Buckeyes prevailed, 4-3 (SO), winning the shootout, 3-1.
The Buckeyes led, 2-0, at the end of the first period on a power-play goal by Peter Boyd and a shorthanded score from Patrick Schafer. Miami tied the game with the only two goals of the second, as Carter Camper scored on the power play and Justin Vaive tallied even-strength with 47 seconds left in the period.
Ohio State regained the lead on Sergio Somma’s tally 29 seconds into the third period. The RedHawks again tied the game when Jarod Palmer scored a 5-on-3 goal at 14:21.
The teams skated through the rest of regulation and the 5-minute overtime tied, leading to the deciding shootout. Corey Elkins scored for Ohio State in the first round and Joseph Palmer made a save on Miami’s Pat Cannone. Buckeye Zac Dalpe and Miami’s Camper both scored in the second round, but Boyd clinched the Ohio State win with a goal to open round three. Ohio State earned two points in the conference standings, while the RedHawks received one for advancing to the shootout.
In net, Palmer had 24 saves for Ohio State. The Buckeyes converted 1-of-7 power-play chances and Miami was 2-for-9 with the man advantage.
This and That
The shorthanded goal by Patrick Schafer was the first of his career. It was the first for a Buckeye since Nov. 30, 2007 at Michigan.
Peter Boyd clinched the win for the Buckeyes in the shootout. He had a team-best four gamewinning goals a year ago.
Sophomores accounted for all eight of the Buckeyes’ points in regulation.
Sergio Somma had his first two-point game since Jan. 5, 2008 vs. Alaska and the third of his career.
John Albert had the third two-assist game of his Buckeye career and his first since Jan. 26, 2008 at Lake Superior State.
Ohio State is 25-18-3 all-time in season openers and are undefeated in their last four (3-0-1). Under John Markell, the Buckeyes are 7-5-2 in the first game of a season.
Kyle Reed had his four-game scoring streak stopped in the game vs. the RedHawks.
Freshmen Matt Bartkowski, Ian Boots, Zac Dalpe, Cory Schneider and Mike Folkes all played in their first collegiate game vs. the RedHawks. Sophomore Hunter Bishop saw action in his first game for Ohio State. He played four collegiate games for North Dakota in 2006-07.
Ian Boots was playing his first regulation game since his junior season ended with the Brockville Braves in 2007.
Senior captain Zach Pelletier was playing in his first countable game since March 4, 2007 vs. Northern Michigan. Pelletier missed all of last season after suffering a leg injury.
The Buckeyes’ shootout win ended a six-game losing streak to the RedHawks.
Sophomore defenseman Erick Belanger was playing in his first countable game since Nov. 8, 2007 vs. Nebraska-Omaha. He played in six games a year ago.
The Buckeyes return to Value City Arena next weekend for a two-game CCHA series with Lake Superior State. The teams will meet at 7:05 p.m. Friday (Oct. 17) and at 8:05 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 18).
