Athletes of the Week
Tommy Goebel, a senior forward on the men’s hockey team, was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Offensive Player of the Week Monday after leading the Buckeyes in their series split at Lake Superior State Jan. 25-26. On the weekend, he posted four goals and five points in the two games combined.
Goebel now has a team-best and career-high 16 goals on the year, including eight power-play tallies to rank fifth (tied) nationally. He also is first on the team with 25 points and is the only Buckeye with more than 14 points. The Parma, Ohio, native notched the 100th point of his collegiate career with his first goal in the win over Lake Superior State Jan. 25. He now has 104 collegiate points (49g, 55a), with 28 goals, 23 assists and 51 points at Ohio State and a 21-32-53 line at Michigan State (2003-04, 04-05).
The No. 7 wrestling team trailed throughout the evening Jan. 25 in St. John Arena against eighth-ranked Penn State, but took its first and only lead for the win after the final match at 141 pounds. Down, 19-16, redshirt-junior J Jaggers pinned fifth-ranked Jake Strayer in 3:25 to seal the OSU victory and give the Buckeyes their second win over the Nittany Lions this season. Ohio State defeated Penn State, 24-11, Jan. 13 at the 2008 National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and improves to 14-3 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten.
The win by Jaggers marked the sixth time this season he has beaten a Top 20 wrestler and second time he has defeated Strayer, once when the Nittany Lion was ranked second in the nation (National Duals) and fifth (Jan. 25). Of his six wins over a ranked grappler, three have come via fall.

Men’s Basketball (14-6; 5-2 Big Ten)

Sophomore guard David Lighty scored a team-high 16 points to lead Ohio State to a 64-58 win over Illinois Jan. 22 in front of a sellout crowd in Value City Arena.
The win is the Buckeyes’ fifth-consecutive victory over the Fighting Illini.
Senior guard Jamar Butler made his 100th career start against Illinois and has played 121 games overall.
Butler went on to lead all scorers Jan. 26 in the Buckeyes’ 76-60 win over Minnesota in front of another sellout crowd in Value City Arena.
The win for the Buckeyes against the Gophers is their 48th-consecutive home win against an unranked opponent (45 wins in Value City Arena, two wins in St. John Arena, one win in Nationwide Arena).

Junior guard Ashlee Trebilcock led all Buckeye scorers with a career-high 25 points. Freshman center Jantel Lavender added 21 points and nine rebounds to the OSU effort.

In its first collegiate competition of the season, second-ranked Ohio State went undefeated at 10-0 Jan. 26 with wins over seven Top 10 teams at the New York University Duals in New York. Both the OSU men’s and women’s squads were perfect at 5-0 on the day.
The women knocked off the nation’s No. 1-ranked women’s squad with a 15-12 win over Notre Dame. Other wins for the OSU women’s team included a 20-3 win over No. 3 Columbia, an 18-6 win over No. 6 Northwestern, a 20-3 win over No. 7 St. John’s and a 25-2 win over host NYU.
The men did not fence No. 1 Penn State, but notched wins over No. 3 Notre Dame (19-8), No. 4 St. John’s (18-4), No. 5 Columbia (19-8), Yale (19-8) and NYU (14-13).
The OSU women’s epee squad came up with a 6-3 win over Notre Dame to lead the Buckeyes to their upset win of the No. 1-ranked Fighting Irish. That group, which included Leslie Lampman, Elyse Gurnowski, Aleksandra Obrazcova and Kaela Brendler, went 31-14 overall on the day. The OSU women’s sabre trio of Falencia Miller, Eileen Grench and Siobhan Byrne went 34-11 overall during the competition.
The OSU women’s foil squad of Julia Tikhonova, Lindsay Knauer, Oksana Dmytruk and Sarah Smith went 32-13 overall.
The OSU men’s foil team of Ben Parkins, Colin Sutter and Andras Horanyi went 36-9 on the day, including 7-2 against Notre Dame. The men’s sabre team of Robert Douville, Sergey Smirnov, Mikhail Momtselidze and Dexter Wilde went 31-14. The OSU men’s epee squad of Mykhaylo Mazur, Jason Pryor, Sean Harder and Bishara Korkor went 30-16, including a 7-2 advantage over Notre Dame.

No. 7 Men’s Gymnastics (3-4; 2-3 Big Ten)

Ohio State lost to No. 6 Illinois, 355.65-348.1, Jan. 26 in St. John Arena. Buckeye junior captain Jake Bateman led the squad with a competition-best 89.1 all-around score after scoring season-highs on all events but high bar.
Senior captain Jimmy Wickham propelled himself to the top of the vault standings with a 16.25 and Bateman won parallel bars with a score of 15.3.
As a team, Ohio State improved its scores on floor, pommel horse, rings, vault and parallel bars and outscored conference foe Illinois on parallel bars, winning the fifth rotation, 57.4-57.25.

No. 22 Women’s Gymnastics (2-1; 1-0 Big Ten)

In its home-opener Jan. 26 in St. John Arena, 18th-ranked Ohio State scored a 193.400 in a narrow .225 loss to N.C. State, which scored a 193.625.
Ohio State senior Kaylan Clevinger won the all-around title with a 38.475 and a Buckeye won or tied for first on three of the four events.
For the third time this season, Clevinger led the Buckeyes on bars with a 9.825. Sophomore Hillary Dow tied for first on vault with a season-high 9.775, while senior Maalika Moore-Thomas tied for first on beam with a season-high 9.750.

Freshman Peter Boyd’s power-play goal with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Buckeyes to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Lake Superior State Jan. 25 in Taffy Abel Arena. The Buckeyes trailed, 3-2, in the third period before scoring two unanswered goals for the road win.
Senior Tommy Goebel led the Buckeyes with two goals on the night.
Ohio State fought back from two goals down to tie the game at 5 in the third period, but Lake Superior State scored its fifth power-play goal of the contest 42 seconds into overtime to give the Lakers a 6-5 victory in game two Jan. 26 in Taffy Abel Arena.
Goebel’s first goal of the game was the 50th point of his Buckeye career as he also had a five-point weekend. Goebel now has 103 collegiate points, with 28 goals, 22 assists and 50 points at Ohio State and a 21-32-53 line at Michigan State (2003-04, 04-05). He leads the Buckeyes with a career-high 16 goals and also has a team-high 25 points this season, including eight power-play tallies.

Junior goaltender Liana Bonanno stopped all 26 shots and sophomore defenseman Rachel Davis collected a career-high three points as Ohio State defeated Niagara, 4-0, Jan. 25 at Dwyer Arena in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
The shutout by Bonanno was her second of the season and career. The native of Mount Sinai, N.Y., made 13 saves against the Niagara power play to help the Buckeyes to a perfect 6-of-6 mark on the penalty kill.
Davis scored twice in the first period to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Junior forward Morgan Marziali scored twice and added an assist in the third period to lead the Buckeyes to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against Niagara Jan. 26. Teal Bishop and Mallory Peckels also scored for Ohio State. The goal by Bishop, a freshman defenseman, was the second of the series and her career.
This weekend, the Buckeyes host Minnesota Duluth at the OSU Ice Rink. Along with battling the Bulldogs, Ohio State also will take on the fight to better life for the young people of Columbus. At both games, the Buckeyes will collect gently used teenage clothing, new socks and undershirts, toiletry items and monetary donations for the Huckleberry House, a non-profit organization that offers a safe and supportive alternative to life on the streets for Columbus teens. Pistol

Ohio State defeated The Citadel last weekend in Charleston, S.C. The Buckeyes won all three open events, winning free pistol, 1,981 to 1,607, standard pistol, 2,088 to 1,929 and air pistol, 2,206 to 2,023. OSU finished the open events with a 6,275 mark to 5,559 for The Citadel.
The top shooters for Ohio State in the open events included Seth Berglee who shot a 527 in free pistol and a 572 in air pistol. Teresa Meyer was the top scorer for the Buckeyes in standard pistol with a 545. In the women’s events, Krystin Schmid was OSU’s top scorer in air pistol with a 366 while Meyer shot a team-high 566 in sport pistol.

Rifle

Ohio State finished in fourth place at the Roger Withrow Invitational hosted by Murray State University. The Buckeyes scored a 4,513 for the event, shooting 2,239 in smallbore rifle and 2,274 in air rifle. West Virginia finished first at the Invitational with a 4,609, scoring a 2,288 in smallbore rifle and a 2,321 in air rifle.
James Clark finished fourth overall in smallbore rifle, shooting a 575 and finished tied for 16th in air rifle with a 577.
In the smallbore rifle, freshman Jasmine Margaria tied for 18th at 563 while junior Steven Nozaki tied for 26th with a 555. In air rifle, Nozaki tied for 27th with a 572 and Staci Collins tied for 31st with a 568.

Softball

The defending Big Ten champion softball team has elected senior second baseman Brittany Vanderink as its captain for the 2008 season. One of six starters back from the Buckeyes’ squad that went 40-18 a year ago, Vanderink is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and ranks sixth in program history with a .338 career batting average. A left-handed slapper, Vanderink is a career 46-for-49 base stealer and she ups her career batting average to .411 in Big Ten games.

Women’s Swimming and Diving (6-4; 1-1 Big Ten)

Ohio State fell to Big Ten opponent Northwestern, 167-133, Jan. 26 at the Norris Aquatic Center in Evanston, Ill.
The Scarlet and Gray swimmers came away with three first-place finishes, while the divers swept the top two places in the one- and three-meter events.
Captain Linda Lund-Kristiansen earned the Buckeyes’ first win of the evening. The senior touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 24.16.
Junior Chelsea Davis led Ohio State on the boards, capturing both the one- and three-meter events with scores of 318.53 and 327.45, respectively.
The Buckeyes were led by Megan Alexander in the 200 breaststroke. The sophomore took the top spot in a time of 2:20.37. Also finishing first was sophomore Jill Lockhart in the 400 individual medley in a season-best time of 4:23.69

Ohio State opened its dual season Jan. 23 in the OSU Varsity Tennis Center with a pair of 7-0 victories over Butler and Xavier. The two wins increases the Buckeyes’ home win streak to 59, dating back to 2003.
Ohio State now is 19-0 in season openers under head coach Ty Tucker, who is in his ninth year with the Scarlet and Gray.
The Buckeyes then traveled to Oxford, Miss., where they faced No. 5 Ole Miss., Jan. 26. After dropping the doubles point and the first singles match, Ohio State rebounded with four-consecutive singles wins to clinch the 4-2 victory.
Senior Drew Eberly clinched the win with his dramatic three-set victory at No. 4 singles over Bram ten Berge (6-7, 7-6, 6-4).

Ohio State opened the spring dual season with a 7-0 victory over Marquette Jan. 25 at the Helfaer Tennis and Recreation Center in Milwaukee, Wis.
The Buckeyes swept the singles matches, including a three-set win by freshman Paloma Escobedo at No. 1 singles, and a 7-6, 6-1 victory by junior Angela DiPastina over Erin Watkins at No. 2 singles.
The Buckeyes won the remaining four singles matches, with Christina Keesey winning 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Julie Blackmore topping Christina Ruiz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. Cami Hubbs won at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 and Caitlin O’Keefe nailed down the No. 6 singles spot with a victory over Maggie Wilson, 6-1, 6-3.
Doubles competition earned the Scarlet and Gray another sweep, as DiPastina and Keesey topped Shannon Brown and Lauren Little 8-3, Blackmore and Hubbs knocked off Kylie Moore and Ruiz 9-8, and Escobedo and O’Keefe won 9-7 over Watkins and Maria Calbeto.
Ohio State posted a 2-0 record during the weekend after beating Oklahoma, 6-1, in Milwaukee.
After Ohio State took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, the Sooners rebounded at No. 1 singles to tie the score at 1-all. However, the Buckeyes won the remaining singles competitions for the 6-1 victory.

Ohio State finished competition at the Harry Gladstein Invitational Jan. 26 in Bloomington, Ind.
Senior Anthony Cole took second in the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87. Cole also was the top collegiate athlete in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.73. In the hurdles, freshman Jonathan Francois took fourth with a time of 8.40.
Junior Patrick Whalen took the top spot in the shot put with a toss of 59 feet, 6 1/2 inches. The mark for Whalen is a season-best and currently ranks him third in the Big Ten. Senior Kyle Burns was the top collegiate finisher in the pole vault with a leap of 16 feet, 4 3/4 inches.
Also on the track, junior Elon Simms grabbed the top time in the 600-meter run with a mark of 1:19.82. Simms and Cole joined with sophomores Stephen Robinson and Brandon Woodard to take the 4×400-meter relay title in a time of 3:12.84, besting the field by almost four seconds. That mark is the best time in the Big Ten this season.

Ohio State completed a two-game sweep over Quincy Jan. 25 and Jan. 26 in Quincy, Ill. The Buckeyes won both matches by a 3-0 margin.
In game one, Brett Versen scored a match-high 16.5 points against the Hawks with 11 kills, four ace serves and three assist blocks. For the match, the Buckeyes had a 38-22 advantage in kills and a 10-2 edge in ace serves.
Defensively, Ohio State had a 36-20 advantage in digs with Conor Martin recording a match-high 14 digs. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 10 to 9.5 margin in team blocks. OSU’s Kevin Heine recorded a match-high six assist blocks. At setter, Daniel Mathews posted a match-high 27 assists.
Robbie Klein scored a match-high 13.5 points with 11 kills, two ace serves and an assist block in game two.
Ohio State hit .361 for the match to .141 for Quincy in game two. The Buckeyes had a 42-30 margin in kills and a nine to two edge in ace serves. Mathews recorded a match-high four ace serves against the Hawks. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 25-21 margin in digs with Martin recording a match-high six. Ben Spurlock recorded a match-high three blocks. At setter, Mathews collected a match-high 33 assists.

Down by as much as nine points on two occasions, seventh-ranked Ohio State rallied to beat No. 8 Penn State, 22-19, Jan. 25 in front of 2,231 fans in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes trailed throughout the evening taking their first and only lead for the win after the final match at 141 pounds. Down, 19-16, redshirt-junior J Jaggers pinned fifth-ranked Jake Strayer in 3:25 to seal the OSU victory. It is the second time this season Ohio State has defeated Penn State as the Buckeyes also garnered a 24-11 win over the Nittany Lions at the National Duals Jan. 13.
The 10th-ranked Jaggers and senior heavyweight J.D. Bergman kept Ohio State in the match after pinning their respective opponents. Prior to Jaggers’ pin, Bergman, ranked second in the nation, dropped Stefan Tighe in 1:45 to pull the Scarlet and Gray within three points (16-13) with just three bouts remaining after being down by nine points (16-7) for the second time in the match.
