Men’s Hockey: Buckeyes Come From Behind to Top Lake Superior State 4-3 on Boyd’s Goal with 8.9 Seconds Left in Regulation – Ohio State Buckeyes

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. Ohio State freshman Peter Boyd’s power-play goal with 8.9 seconds remaining in regulation lifted the Buckeye men’s hockey team to a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Lake Superior State Friday in Taffy Abel Arena. The Buckeyes trailed, 3-2, in the third period before scoring two unanswered goals for the road win.
Buckeye senior Tommy Goebel led the squad with two goals. He tied the game at 2 with 45 seconds remaining in the second period, marking his 100th career collegiate point, and again tying the game in the third after the Lakers had gone ahead (3-2). Goebel also drew the penalty late in the third that led to the gamewinning goal. Rookie Shane Sims assisted on both third-period goals for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes and Lakers will close out the two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at 7:05 p.m. Saturday in Taffy Abel Arena.
The teams ended the first period tied at 1. Buckeye sophomore Mathieu Picard put Ohio State on top 7:34 into the game, finding a loose puck in front of the net and lifting it past Laker goalie Brian Mahoney-Wilson for his fifth goal of the season. Freshmen John Albert and Chris Reed assisted on the goal. The Lakers tied the game on Carter Lee’s tally at 11:52, as he scored following a turnover in the Buckeye zone. Buckeye goalie Joseph Palmer made 12 saves in the period, including all six Laker power-play attempts on net. Mahoney-Wilson had 10 stops for the Lakers. Lake Superior State had the only power-play chances of the period, going 0-for-2.
The score was knotted at 2 after the second. The Lakers went ahead 2-1 at 5:51, when Pat Aubry scored high from the slot. Goebel tied the score with a goal with just 45 seconds remaining in the period, as he got the puck under Mahoney-Wilson following a Jason DeSantis shot. Albert started the play, cycling the puck down low before passing to DeSantis. The Buckeyes outshot the Lakers in the period, 13-5. The Buckeyes had two power-play attempts and held the Lakers without a shot on their one power-play advantage.
The Lakers again took a one-goal lead (3-2) when Zac MacVoy’s goal from the left post found the back of the net at 6:15of the third period. Goebel tied the score at 3 at 9:59 with a power-play goal, taking passes from Sims and freshman Sergio Somma. Goebel drew a hooking penalty at 17:53, setting up the final Buckeye power play. On the winning goal, freshman Kyle Reed passed to Sims at the right point. Sims’ shot was saved, but Boyd was able to lift the puck with Mahoney-Wilson on the ice. The Buckeyes put 15 shots on net in the period, while Palmer stopped 9-of-10 attempts in the Ohio State net. Ohio State converted both of its power-play chances in the period and was not assessed a penalty.
For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Lakers, 39-28. Palmer made 25 saves in all 60 minutes. Mahoney-Wilson had 35 saves in 59:52 between the pipes.
The Buckeyes were 2-for-4 on the power play in the game and stopped the Lakers on all three of their chances.
Postgame Notes
Goebel now has 101 collegiate points, with 26 goals, 22 assists and 48 points at Ohio State and a 21-32-53 line at Michigan State (2003-04, 04-05). He leads the Buckeyes with 14 goals and 22 points this season, including eight power-play tallies.
His two goals matched his season and Ohio State best, first set at Michigan Nov. 30.
Sims had the second two-assist game of his Buckeye career, tying the mark he set Dec. 8 vs. St. Lawrence.
Boyd has a team-high three game-winning goals this year.
Albert had the first two-point and multiple-assist game of his career.
