COLUMBUS, Ohio The Mascot Hall of Fame has announced that Brutus Buckeye has been named to the Ballot of Induction for the 2007 class. Voting begins August 6 and runs until September 6.
Fans can vote for Brutus by going to http://www.mascothalloffame.com/.
The tradition of Brutus Buckeye was started in 1965 by the student organization Ohio Staters Inc. An art student designed and introduced the first Brutus, while the name was chosen in a contest. Brutus’ look has been updated several times to the present Buckeye head and block O hat, scarlet and gray shirt emblazoned “Brutus” and “00”, red pants with an Ohio State towel hanging over the front, and high white socks with black shoes. Male and female students both serve as Brutus Buckeye; generally two to five per year.
Joining Brutus on the collegiate ballot (there is also a ballot for professional team mascots) are the following school mascots:
Nebraska mascot Lil Red;
Michigan State mascot Sparty;
University of Tennessee mascot Smokie;
University of Miami mascot The Ibis; and
Western Kentucky University mascot Big Red.
The Mascot Hall of Fame welcomed its inaugural class in 2005, and has since been inducting great mascot performers, performances, and programs that have inspired tradition and positively affected their communities. The class of 2005 welcomed the Phillie Phanatic, the Phoenix Suns Gorilla, and the Famous Chicken. The class of 2006 included Clutch the Bear, KC Wolf, The Jazz Bear, YoUDee, Aubie, and Bucky Badger.
