Athletes of the Week
Katie Dull of the women’s volleyball team had career highs of 19 points, 14 kills, three ace serves, four block assists and 14 digs in the 3-0 win over Youngstown State. She hit a team-best .423 (14-3-26) in the match.
Goalkeeper Lauren Robertson recorded three shutouts and 13 saves last week to be named Big Ten women’s soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Robertson, from Mission Viejo, Calif., was instrumental in three Buckeye wins, recording shutouts against Wright State (3-0), Pepperdine (1-0) and San Diego (2-0). In addition, the sophomore recorded an assist on Ohio State’s third goal against Wright State.
Robertson is 5-0-0 on the year with four shutouts and currently leads the Big Ten with a 0.39 goals-against-average and .920 save percentage.
Athletics Good Stuff
The 2007 class was officially inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame over the weekend. The inductees include Andy Dumpis (volleyball), Ivan Gilbert (fencing), Marv Homan (administration), Pete Johnson (football), Susan Mallery (track/cross country), Kristy Dascoli (tennis), Yalena Kalkina (fencing), Conny Kirsch (rowing) and Anna Smith (softball). Long-time equipment manager Brice “Wes” Westfall was presented with an honorary Varsity “O”.
Behind one of the best defensive showings in team history, the football team downed Akron, 20-2, Saturday in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes limited the Zips to 69 total yards and three first downs. Offensively, Chris Wells recorded the first 100-yard game of his career with 143 stripes on 20 carries. Todd Boeckman tossed a pair of touchdowns for the second game in a row.
The 22nd-ranked men’s soccer team won its second-consecutive tournament last weekend, beating No. 25 Old Dominion 3-2 and William & Mary 5-0 to win the Penn State Nike Classic. The Buckeyes are 3-0-1 and travel to the UCLA Soccer Classic this weekend. Senior Hermann Trophy candidate Eric Brunner was named the MVP of the Penn State Nike Classic and was joined on the all-tournament team by senior Xavier Balc, junior Patrick Roan and sophomore Andrew Magill. The 5-0 win over William & Mary Sunday was Ohio State’s most lopsided victory since 1999.
The women’s soccer team has tied the best start in the program’s history with five-consecutive wins to open the season. Ohio State head coach Lori Walker’s team defeated two formidable opponents this weekend: Pepperdine (a 1-0 win on a goal by sophomore Ashley Bowyer) and San Diego (2-0 on goals by senior All-America and player of the year candidate Lara Dickenmann and freshman Alex Burzynski).
20th-ranked women’s volleyball defeated Youngstown State, 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-25) last Tuesday to have a 5-1 overall record. Freshman Katie Dull recorded career-highs of 19 points, 14 kills, three ace serves, 14 digs and four assist blocks against the Penguins. Danielle Meyer added 14.5 points and Briana McCarthy 10.
Ohio State plays at Illinois State (8-2) Tuesday and then returns to St. John Arena to host the Sports Imports Classic where the Buckeyes face fourth-ranked Southern California (8-0) Friday and Oregon (9-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. For the Friday game, fans can purchase a family four pack which includes four tickets, hot dogs, sodas and popcorns for $26. In addition, the first 500 fans will receive free memo boards.
Head coach Jim Stone announced Monday he will retire effective July 31, 2008. In his 26th season with the Buckeyes, Stone has a 523-279 (.652) overall record with the Buckeyes and is 190-164 (.639) in Big Ten Conference play. Under Stone, Ohio State has won three Big Ten Championships (1989, 91, 94) and the Buckeyes have played in 15 of the last 18 NCAA championships, advancing to the national championship semifinals in 1991 and 1994.
The field hockey team (2-5, 0-0 Big Ten) dropped both games in the Terrapin Invitational, Sat.-Sun., falling to No. 1 Maryland and No. 12 American. The Buckeyes trailed by just one goal, 2-1, against the two-time defending NCAA champions Saturday, but the Terrapins scored twice in the second half to pull away with a 4-1 win. Senior midfielder Yesenia Luces scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season to increase her point total to 13.
After a scoreless first half against American, senior forward Michaela O’Malley scored to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. The goal was her third of the season. But the Eagles then scored three unanswered goal for the 3-1 victory. Ohio State also fell earlier in the week to Kent State by a score of 3-0, Sept. 4.
The Buckeyes continue their road swing when they head to Miami Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game.
The women’s cross country team opened the 2007 season with a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Queen City Invitational. The Buckeyes were led by freshman Ellen Birmingham, who placed ninth in the meet in a time of 18:51.85. The Buckeyes run at Bowling Green Saturday.
The men’s cross country team competes in meet No. 2 of the season Friday at the Tennessee Twilight Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.
The men’s golf team travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to open its fall season at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Fri.-Sat. The event will be held at the par 72, 7,248-yard UNM Championship Course. Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, is in his 35th season at the helm of the Buckeyes with a career record of 5,490-1,741-38. The team has four seniors, including Zach Sebert who is coming off a summer in which he qualified for the U.S. Amateur and won the Mid-Ohio Invitational with rounds of 66-62128 to break the tournament scoring record by seven strokes.
The women’s golf team will open its fall season at the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship Fri.-Sun. in Nashville, Tenn. The tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt University, is set to be played at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club on the par 72, 3,320 yard Ironhorse Course. The Buckeyes, returning seven student-athletes from the 2006-07 roster including two-time Women’s Ohio Amateur Champion Emma Jandel, last participated in the Mason Rudolph Women’s Championship in 2002, placing tied for third.
