13th Ranked Women’s Volleyball Defeats Pacific, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 13th-ranked Ohio State (4-1) women’s volleyball team defeated Pacific (1-1), 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 33-31) in the second round of the Coors Classic in Ft. Collins, Colo. OSU’sDanielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) had a match-high 20 points against the Tigers with Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) adding 14 and Anna Szerszen (So., Conflans Ste Hne, France) 11.5. Meyer recorded a match-high 15 kills (.314), adding an ace serve, a solo block and six assists. McCarthy (.333) and Szerszen (.227) each had 10 kills in the match with McCarthy adding an ace serve, two solo blocks and two assists while Szerszen had an ace serve and an assist block. Pacific’s Kara Uhl posted a team-high 13.5 points with 12 kills, a solo block and an assist.
Game one saw Ohio State overcome an early 7-4 Pacific lead with a five point scoring run starting with a McCarthy kill. After a Tiger error, a Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) kill tied the game at seven. A Pacific error and another Dull kill put the Buckeyes ahead, 9-7. At 9-8, a Meyer kill, two Pacific errors and a Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.)-Betsy Hone (Fr., Celina, Ohio) block gave Ohio State a 13-8 lead. The Tigers responded with five straight points to tie the game at 13. Two Pacific errors returned the lead to the Buckeyes at 15-13. Leading 15-14, A Dozier kill, a Dozier-Szerszen block and a McCarthy solo block took the lead to four at 18-14. At 21-18, OSU scored five consecutive points starting with two kills from Meyer. A Pacific error, a Dozier kill and a Meyer ace serve took the lead to eight at 26-18. A Szerszen kill set game point at 29-20. An Alexa Anderson kill and an Uhl solo block stopped two game points but a McCarthy kill ended the game at 30-22 for the Buckeyes. In the game, Ohio State hit .389 to .119 for Pacific.
Pacific opened game two with an Anderson kill to take a 1-0 lead. Buckeye kills from Dull, Szerszen and Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) put Ohio State ahead for good at 3-1. The Buckeyes went up 20-11 only to see the Tigers score four straight points to cut the lead to five at 20-15. At 25-20, a Szerszen kill and a Tiger error made it 27-20. An Uhl kill cut the lead to six at 27-21. Ohio State, with kills from McCarthy and Meyer reached game point at 29-21. The Buckeyes, with a Hone-Meyer block ended the game at 30-21 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. In the game, Ohio State hit .412 to .061 for Pacific.
With Ohio State leading, 9-7, the Tigers used a six-point run to open a 13-9 lead. Pacific extended the lead to five several times and held a 27-23 lead before kills from Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.) and Meyer cut the margin to two at 27-25. A Meagan MimMack kill gave Pacific a 28-25 lead. Two Meyer kills cut the lead to one at 28-27 as Pacific called time out. A Hone-Meyer block tied the game at 28. Pacific’s Johanna Hilbers kill at 29-28 gave Pacific a game point attempt. Meyer responded with a kill to tie the game at 29. A Tiger attack error gave Ohio State a 30-29 lead, serving match point. A Hilbers kill stopped the game point, tying the game at 30. OSU took a 31-30 lead with a Hone kill and served its second match point. A Tiger block by Masha Vaysburg and Shannon Krug stopped the point and tied the game at 31. Dull, with a kill, gave OSU a 32-31 lead and its third match point attempt. Ohio State, with an ace serve from Dull, won the game, 33-31, to take the match, 3-0. Pacific out hit Ohio State in the game, .153 to .135.
For the match, Ohio State hit .258 to .119 for Pacific. The Buckeyes had a 50-46 advantage in kills and a four to two edge in ace serves. Defensively, the Tigers had a 46-44 edge in digs with Tiger Julie Magud collecting a match-high 13. Ohio State had a 12 to five margin in team blocks in the match with OSU’s Meyer recording a match-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. At setter, Hone produced a match-high 38 assists in the contest for the Buckeyes while Krug had 35 assists for Pacific.
The Buckeyes will open the home part of the schedule next Tuesday at 7 p.m. when Ohio State will host the Youngstown State Penguins in St. John Arena.
