COLUMBUS, Ohio Senior midfielder Yesenia Luces recorded her 100th career point as the No. 13 Ohio State field hockey team defeated Bucknell by a score of 6-1 Sunday at North Turf Field in the concluding game of the Buckeye Invitational. Luces led the Buckeyes with five points on two goals and an assist and is just the sixth player in OSU history to reach the 100-point milestone. Ohio State and Bucknell both move to 1-1 overall on the season.
Both Ohio State captains had stellar games as well, as forward Michaela O’Malley, a native of Stow, Mass., scored twice for the Buckeyes while junior midfielder Linda Haussener, from Baden, Switzerland, had a goal and assist.
After being down 1-0 when Trina Boyer of the Bison scored at 17:03, the Buckeyes scored six unanswered goals for the victory. Ohio State knotted the game at 1-all when freshman Jena Cacciatore, a forward from Allentown, Pa., scored off a pass from Luces, a native of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, at 19:27 for her first goal as a Buckeye.
Ohio State scored three goals within a three-minute span to pull away and take a 4-1 lead into halftime. At 29:12, Luces tapped in a penalty corner shot by Haussener. After feeding the ball in on the penalty corner, Luces went over to the left side of the net and jabbed in the ball to give the Buckeyes the lead. Just 26 seconds later, O’Malley scored unassisted when she charged toward the net and fired the ball in. Haussener then scored at 32:30 when she lifted a loose ball into the goal.
In the second half, the Buckeyes tallied two more goals for a final score of 6-1. O’Malley tapped in a rebound at 48:03. Luces then scored her 100th point at 59:33 when she knocked the ball in from the left side off a pass across the cage from sophomore Melissa Palm, a native of West Vancouver, British Columbia. The assist was Palm’s first point as a Buckeye.
With 101 points, Luces, the 2006 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, is tied for fifth with Katie Hobson (1997-2000). Danielle Dayton (1989-92) is fourth with 110 points. Luces also is now tied for fourth in the OSU records with 31 career assists and seventh with 35 career goals.
Several Buckeyes played their first career minutes in the game, including redshirt-freshman Ali Ristas, a goalkeeper from Columbus, Ohio, who patrolled the Buckeye goal for the last 18:44 of the game and made one save. Also seeing their first action were freshman Alicia Anzivine, redshirt-freshmen Keri Houser and Melissa Hunter and junior Jen Martin.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani, from Mountain Top, Pa., improved to 1-1 this season, making one save in 51:16. Bison keeper Jessie Atieh made three saves and picked up the loss to move to 1-1.
Overall for the game, the Buckeyes had a 14-6 advantage in shots, including a 9-4 margin in the first half. Ohio State also led in penalty corners, 5-1.
