COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team, under the direction of 11th-year head coach Lori Walker, dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 22 Wake Forest in an exhibition match Tuesday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The exhibition, played in humid, 81-degree weather and through a torrential downpour for part of the third period, consisted of three 30 minute periods. Wake led, 1-0, after the first 30 minutes on an own goal. Forward Kaley Fountain sent a corner kick into the box that was inadvertently headed into the Ohio State net.
The Demon Deacons added goals in each of the next two periods as well with Whitney Berry and Jill Hutchinson scoring. Sarah Winslow assisted on both scores.
Ohio State played without several key individuals. Standout Lara Dickenmann is with the Swiss National Team preparing to play a European Championship qualifier match against Germany on Wednesday. Junior Lisa Collison, a member of the Canadian National Team, sat out to rest a minor ailment. The end result was Walker started five freshmen and eight freshmen saw significant playing time.
“It’s a fine line trying to build continuity while at the same time trying to give people a chance to see what they can bring to the table in a real game situation,” Walker said. “We had some experienced attackers who did not play. We focused on the play of our back line and midfield and I’m happy with the way we played in the back. We had an own goal and the other two goals were the results of exceptional play on Wake Forest’s part. We didn’t let anyone behind us.”
Lauren Hallauer, a true freshman defender from Fairfax, Va., was selected by the coaches as the team’s player of the game. “Lauren is going to bring so much to our back line,” Walker said. “She has great speed and terrific left-to-right agility.”
Wake Forest, under the direction of head coach Tony da Luz, came into the match ranked 22nd nationally in the initial NSCAA/adidas Preseason National Rankings. The team was 16-6-1 last season.
The match will be the only exhibition contest for Ohio State. The team will now prepare for the official start of the 15th season of women’s soccer, which will take place Aug. 31 with a noon game against Butler at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
