Ohio State Rowing Announces Team Awards – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team celebrated its record-setting 2007 season Sunday at the team banquet where the award winners were announced. The Buckeyes completed their season with a third-place finish at the NCAA championships, a program best, and also placed second in the first varsity eight grand final, the highest any OSU boat has finished at NCAAs.
Senior co-captain Justine Mahler of Cincinnati, Ohio, was named Most Valuable Rower. Mahler was a member of both the first and second varsity eight boats this season and received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
A pair of Ohio natives – Patricia Goodeman and Jackie Ruetenik – earned the Most Improved Rower awards. Goodeman, a senior from Waterville, rowed with the nationally-ranked first varsity crew that completed the regular season at 7-1. Ruetenik, a junior from Vermilion, competed with the second varsity eight that finished fifth in its NCAA championship grand final.
The Golden Buckeye Award was given to senior Briony Clare. A native of Sydney, Australia, Clare was awards for her spirit and inspiration. She was a member of the first varsity eight crew and earned CRCA Second Team All-Central Region honors.
Sophomore Sara Wallace of Lebanon, Ohio, was named Novice of the Year. Wallace worked her way up to the first varsity four and rowed in the petite final of the NCAA championships, where the crew finished 10th in the nation.
