Synchronized Swimming Celebrates 2007 Season – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team held its annual team banquet to celebrate the 2007 season Friday at the Faculty Club on the OSU campus. Seven team awards were handed out, including the Carmen Ohio honor, which was awarded to senior Ellen Hacker (Newark, Ohio) for her outstanding leadership and spirit.
Barbara Nesbitt (Fr., Riverside, Calif.) was the winner of the Most Outstanding Swimmer award. The honor is given to the swimmer who earns the most points at the U.S. Collegiate National championships.
Jayme DeLancy (So., Hamden, Conn.) was the recipient of the Most Improved Swimmer award and Hannah Shively (Fr., Westerville, Ohio) earned Most Improved New Swimmer honors. Two swimmers earned the Buckeye Award in Leah Pinette (Jr., Bristol, Conn.) and Julia Broadfoot (Jr., El Cajon, Calif.). The accolade is presented to the athlete who exhibits outstanding Buckeye spirit, a strong ability to work well with their teammates and coaches, excellent motivation and a clear vision of what it means to be a team player.
The 2007 winner of the JoAnn Ferguson Kale award was Michelle Benzie (Jr., El Cajon, Calif.). Benzie fit the criteria of a student-athlete who excels in the classroom and is friendly, helpful and respectful to others.
Brook Paul (Jr., Westerville, Ohio) was the recipient of the Jessica Beck Award. In its second year, the accolade was created as a tribute to Buckeye swimmer Jessica Beck, who died in 2005. The swimmer who possesses the qualities Beck demonstrated in respect, dedication and “sunshine” spirit is awarded the honor. The 2006 honoree was Becky Kim.
The 2007 Collegiate All-Americans, as well as the Collegiate Academic award winners were recognized. Hacker, Carmen Moraes (honorary) (So., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Nesbitt, Pinette, Shively and Caitlin Stewart (Fr., Huntington, Beach, Calif.) earned Collegiate All-America laurels. Liz Derr (Fr., St. Paul, Minn.), Rita Gillan (Fr., Andover, Mass.), Shively and Kendra Sollars (So., Scottsdale, Ariz.) were academic award winners.
