Tip of the Week Vitamin Water
Coaches and Staff:
Please be advised that certain ingredients in the sports drink “Vitamin Water” include banned or impermissible substances under NCAA bylaws 16.5.2(g) and 31.2.3.4. Flavors deemed “impermissible” include amino acids that cannot be purchased for student-athletes, and contain elements outside the categories set forth in Bylaw 16.5.2(g).

Vitamin Water flavors approved by the NCAA include: Revive – Fruit Punch Essential – Orange-Orange XXX – Acai, Blueberry, Pomegranate Focus – Kiwi Strawberry Formula 50 – Grape Multi-V – Lemonade Charge – Lemon Lime Endurance – Peach-Mango Defense – Raspberry Mango
Vitamin Water will maintain a presence at NCAA Championships because its manufacturer, Glaceau, is owned by NCAA corporate sponsor Coca-Cola. However, only “Revive-Fruit Punch” will be available at such events. Other permissible flavors are available to schools competing in championships, per institutional request. 16.5.2(g): Nutritional Supplements. An institution may provide only nonmuscle-building nutritional supplements to a student-athlete at any time for the purpose of providing additional calories and electrolytes, provided the supplements do not contain any NCAA banned substances. Permissible nonmuscle-building nutritional supplements are identified according to the following classes: Carbohydrate/electrolyte drinks, energy bars, carbohydrate boosters and vitamins and minerals. 31.2.3.4: Banned Drugs. The following is the list of banned-drug classes. The Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (or a designated subcommittee) has the authority to identify specific banned drugs and exceptions within each class. The institution and student-athlete shall be held accountable for all drugs within the banned-drug classes regardless of whether hey have been specifically identified. The current list of specific banned drugs and exceptions is located on the NCAA Web site (ncaa.org) or may be obtained from the NCAA national office.
