OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – The Ohio State rowing team departed Columbus at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, traveling to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to compete in its eighth-consecutive NCAA Championships. The 2007 event will take place May 25-27 on Melton Hill Lake.
After dropping off their bags at the hotel around noon, the Buckeyes ate lunch and were soon on their way to the regatta site for an afternoon workout. OSU has good memories of the Melton Hill course, winning five-consecutive Central Region championships in Oak Ridge, including the 2007 crown earlier this month.
Rowing equipment manager Joe Pipia drove the boats down Tuesday after the Buckeyes were finished practicing on their home waters at Griggs Reservoir. The team arrived at the course at 2 p.m. and helped Pipia unload the first and second varsity eight and first varsity four boats and other equipment off the trailer and rig them for their practice sessions.
Before they could hit the water, each boat headed to the weighing station to make sure it met with the minimum weight requirements of 205.03 pounds for an eight shell and 112.44 pounds for a four shell. After the weights were confirmed, the Buckeyes headed to the launch sites and once in the water, each boat rowed for approximately an hour.
Upon completing practice, the team then cleaned up and went to dinner, but not too late. The Buckeyes will be back on the water for another practice session at 7 a.m. Thursday in preparation for the Friday heats that open the NCAA championships.
