Buckeyes Row to Fifth-Consecutive Central Region Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team won its fifth-consecutive Central Region championship Sunday at the 2007 Aramark Central/South Region Sprints on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Buckeyes finished atop the Central Region standings with a total of 366 points, with fellow Big Ten team Wisconsin taking second with 346 points. Virginia won the South Region title and was first in the overall standings with 440 points.
Ohio State topped 12 other teams racing in the Central Region, including Big Ten champion Minnesota and Big East champion Notre Dame. The Buckeyes raced in two Grand Finals and three Petite Finals, amassing points for each placement in the races.
In the first varsity eight Grand Final, the 12th-ranked Buckeyes finished second to Virginia by just over two seconds. The crew of Claudia Wurzel (Fr., Como, Italy), Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Susanne Herbrand (So., Magdeburg, Germany), Gabriele Albertaviciute (Jr., Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Giessen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) clocked in at 6:32.92, just behind the No. 5 Cavaliers at 6:30.40. Ohio State topped No. 3 Notre Dame (6:34.68), No. 17 Tennessee (6:37.10), No. 7 Minnesota (6:37.86) and No. 11 Central Florida (6:40.76).
The Ohio State first varsity four also raced in its Grand Final, taking third with a time of 7:35.82. The Buckeye boat of Erin Shropshire, Katie Flarida, Johnna Burns, Sara Wallace and Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) finished just behind Wisconsin at 7:33.81. Virginia ran away with the race, winning with a time of 7:22.70.
The Buckeyes finished first in the Petite Final of the second varsity eight. The boat of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Kate Seighman (Sr., Mason, Ohio), Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio), Jackie Ruetenik (Sr., Vermillion, Ohio), Simone Haubner (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) crossed the finish line at 6:51.40 to edge Michigan with a time of 6:51.82. Ohio State also defeated Notre Dame (6:56.43), Central Florida (6:59.96), Clemson (7:01.28) and Duke (7:05.87) in the event.
Both the open four and first novice eight placed third in their respective Petite Finals. The OSU open four crew of Emily Dougher (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Ashley Korfel (Jr., Westerville, Ohio), Alli Cutlip (So., Waverly, Ohio), Elizabeth LaMantia (Jr., Lima, Ohio) and coxswain Maria Hunter (So., Columbus, Ohio) clocked in at 7:55.42. Central Florida (7:44.00) and Texas (7:51.23) took first and second in the race.
The first novice eight of Katie Clonan Roy, Rachel Scholtz, Sara Garrett, Amanda Ardale, Mandy Merritt, Colleen Casey, Sara Reardon, Jen Lewis and coxswain Liz Seighman finishing at 7:14.28 in their Petite Final. Clemson won the event with a time of 7:08.10, followed by Kansas at 7:11.83.
Ohio State awaits the NCAA championship field announcement, which will be made Tuesday at 3 p.m. The Buckeyes are looking for their eighth-consecutive NCAA appearance. The 2007 NCAA Championships will be held May 25-27 at the same site as the Aramark Central/South Region Sprints on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
