COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team advanced two boats to the Grand Finals races of the 2007 Aramark Central/South Region Sprints Saturday at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The 12th-ranked first varsity eight as well as first varsity four finished in the Top 3 of the respective semifinals to advance to the Grand Finals while the second varsity eight, open four and first novice eight will race in their Petite Finals. All final races, including Grand and Petite Finals as well as C and D Final events, will take place Sunday.
After completing their heats in the morning session, each OSU boat raced in the afternoon semifinals to determine which final they will compete in. The first varsity eight finished second in their race with a time of 6:52.22 to advance to its Grand Final. Virginia, who the Buckeyes defeated earlier in the season, took first at 6:47.50.
In the first varsity four semifinal, Ohio State clocked in at 7:51.29 to place third and advance to the Grand Final as well. Virginia and Notre Dame finished first and second, respectively, to also move into the top race.
The Buckeye second varsity eight finished fourth in its semifinal to move to the Petite Final, while the open four boat and first novice eight each took sixth in their semifinal races to advance to their Petite Finals as well.
Each placement in the final races for the events is assigned a point value. Teams with the highest point total from the Central and South Regions will be the regional champions. Ohio State has won the four-consecutive Central Regional championships and finished atop the overall standings in 2006 to win the Aramark Cup.
