Ohio State Finishes Third at Big Ten Rowing Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team finished third at the 2007 Big Ten Championships Saturday in Madison, Wis. The Buckeyes totaled 103 points to edge Michigan State in fourth at 102. Minnesota won the conference title with 150 points and Michigan finished second with 117. Ohio State raced in four Grand Finals, placing second in the second varsity eight and first varsity four events. The Big Ten championships were held on a 1,810-meter course on Lake Wingra.
Ohio State has finished in the Top 3 of the Big Ten championships all eight years. The Buckeyes won titles in 2002 and 2006, were second in 2001 and 2005 and have placed third four times (2000, 2003, 2004 and 2007).
The third-ranked Ohio State first varsity eight crew of Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Susanne Herbrand (So., Magdeburg, Germany), Zuzanna Trzcinska (So., Ilawa, Poland), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Gabriele Albertaviciute (Jr., Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Giessen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) entered the Grand Final with a 7-1 regular-season record, but the Buckeyes were upset in the race that concluded with just over a four-second difference between the first through fourth places. No. 13 Michigan won the race with a time of 5:57.453, followed by No. 8 Minnesota at 5:59.149 and No. 20 Michigan State at 6:00.265. The Buckeyes clocked in at 6:01.786 to place fourth. Wisconsin was fifth at 6:11.233. Ohio State had previously defeated both the Wolverines and Spartans in the regular season.
In the second varsity eight Grand Final, the boat of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Nora Franzen (Fr., Bad Honnef, Germany), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio), Simone Haubner (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Jackie Ruetenik (Jr., Vermillion, Ohio), Claudia Wurzel (Fr., Como, Italy), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) clocked with a time of 6:10.741 to place second. The Golden Gophers won the race at 6:09.117, while Michigan State was third (6:13.823) and Michigan fourth (6:28.291).
The Buckeyes first varsity four also was second in its Grand Final. Erin Shropshire, Katie Flarida, Johnna Burns, Sara Wallace and coxswain Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) crossed the finish line at 7:02.872 but were edged by Minnesota, who clocked in at 7:00.306. Michigan State (7:03.293) and Wisconsin (7:14.714) rounded out the Grand Final.
Ohio State raced in the Petite Final of the second varsity four and finished first out of the three teams. Buckeyes Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Elizabeth LaMantia (Jr., Lima, Ohio), Alli Cutlip (So., Waverly, Ohio), Katie Seighman (Sr., Mason, Ohio) and coxswain Maria Hunter (So., Columbus, Ohio) clocked in at 7:13.600 to cruise past the Michigan State at 7:36.153 and Iowa at 7:41.903.
The Buckeyes also competed in the Petite Final of the first novice eight. Emily Dougher (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Rachel Scholtz, Katie Clonan Roy, Colleen Casey, Mandy Merritt, Amanda Ardale, Sara Reardon, Jennie Lewis (So., Columbus, Ohio) and coxswain Liz Seighman finished second with a time of 6:39.518, behind Michigan at 6:35.632. Indiana was third at 7:02.015.
The second novice eight took fifth in its Grand Final. The OSU crew of Hannah Jackson, Molly Ford, Hayley Hutchinson, Liz Coulter, Sara Garrett, Kristen Maynard, Kelly Everson, Ashleigh Rea and coxswain Adrienne Heger completed the race with a time of 7:10.266. The Wolverines won the Grand Final at 6:25.792.
The Ohio State rowing team will next compete May 12-13 in the 2007 Aramark South/Central Region Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Buckeyes have won four-consecutive Central Region championships and finished first in the overall standings in 2006.
