Rowing Wins Five Races in Michigan at Big Ten Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team won five races at the Big Ten Invitational hosted by Michigan State Saturday at Lake Ovid in Laigsburg, Mich. In the final regular-season regatta of 2007, the third-ranked OSU first varsity eight boat defeated No. 11 Michigan and No. 20 Michigan State to improve to 7-1 this season with six victories against nationally-ranked crews. In the double-dual format, Ohio State faced Michigan State in the morning session and Michigan in the afternoon. Fellow Big Ten school Indiana also raced in the event.
The Ohio State first varsity eight of Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Susanne Herbrand (So., Magdeburg, Germany), Zuzanna Trzcinska (So., Ilawa, Poland), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Gabiele Albertaviciute (Jr., Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Giessen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) finished with a time of 6:46.66 in the first race against Michigan State, who clocked in at 6:51.76. In their second race, the Buckeyes crossed the finish line at 7:17.1 to defeat Michigan by just over four seconds at 7:21.2.
Ohio State split its second varsity eight races, topping the Wolverines in the second race after falling to the Spartans in the morning. The crew of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Simone Haubner (Leipzig, Germany), Alli Cutlip (So., Waverly, Ohio), Nora Franzen (Fr., Bad Honnef, Germany), Jackie Ruetenik (Jr., Vermillion, Ohio), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) won with a time of 7:39.5 to top Michigan at 7:43.8. Michigan State won the morning race at 6:56.53 while the Buckeyes clocked in at 7:01.63. The OSU first varsity four also was victorious in the afternoon session, as the crew of Erin Shropshire, Katie Flarida, Johnna Burns, Sara Wallace and coxswain Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) finished with a time of 8:29.4 to defeat Michigan by more than 12 seconds. The Buckeyes responded strong in the afternoon, after falling to the Spartans by just 0.75 seconds in the first race with a time of 7:57.50 to MSU’s 7:56.75.
In the second varsity four races, the Buckeyes defeated Michigan State and finished between two UM boats. The crew of Ashley Korfel (Jr., Westerville, Ohio), Elizabeth LaMantia (Jr., Lima, Ohio), Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Katie Seighman (Sr., Mason, Ohio) and coxswain Maria Hunter (So., Columbus, Ohio) topped the Spartans with a time of 8:16.93 to MSU’s 8:28.40. In the afternoon, Ohio State placed second with a time of 8:39.1, between Michigan’s two crews at 8:19.3 and 8:52.0.
After a week off, the Buckeyes will travel to Madison, Wis., to begin postseason racing April 28 at the 2007 Big Ten Championships. Ohio State is the defending conference champion, and with its 2002 and 2006 titles is only the second program in the Big Ten to win multiple crowns.
