An estimated 4,500 fans celebrated the 2006-07 Ohio State men’s basketball season along with Thad Matta, head coach of the Buckeyes, members of the team and staff Wednesday at Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA national championship game April 2 in Atlanta and finished the year 35-4 to set an Ohio State record for wins in a season.
The squad won the outright Big Ten regular-season title for the second-consecutive season and won the 2007 Big Ten Tournament crown as well. Matta was named the league’s coach of the year, his second in three seasons as head coach of the Buckeyes.
In addition to Matta and each of the players, Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman and Gene Smith, director of athletics at Ohio State, addressed the fans in attendance. The hour-long event was carried live across Ohio on the Ohio News Network (ONN), a local cable television entity, and on WBNS radio, the flagship station on the Ohio State basketball radio network.
