No. 6 Rowing Opens Season Strong Against No. 1 Princeton and No. 5 Brown – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The sixth-ranked Ohio State rowing team opened the 2007 season with strong races against No. 1 Princeton and No. 5 Brown Saturday on Carnegie Lake in Princeton, N.J. The day included an upset of top-ranked and defending NCAA champion Princeton in the first varsity eight race as well as a defeat of the Tigers in the second varsity eight race. The competition featured three of the Top 5 teams in the 2006 NCAA Championship: Brown placed second, Princeton third and Ohio State fifth.
The OSU varsity eight of Claudia Wurzel (Fr., Como Italy), Zuza Trzcinska (So., Ilawa, Poland), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Gabriele Albertaviciute (Jr., Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Giessen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) clocked in at 6:57.4 to finish second to Brown at 6:52.8. Princeton took third at 6:59.9.
The Buckeyes were second to the Bears in the second varsity eight as well. The boat of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Simone Hauber (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Jackie Ruetenik (Sr., Vermillion, Ohio), Peta-Leigh Dakyns (So., Johannesburg, South Africa), Alli Cutlip (So., Waverly, Ohio), Nora Franzen (Fr., Bad Honnef, Germany), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) crossed the finish line at 7:12.5. Brown won with a time of 7:09.7 and the Tigers were third at 7:20.2.
In the first varsity four race, the crew of Ashley Korfel (Jr., Westerville, Ohio), Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Emily Dougher (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) and coxswain Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) clocked in at 8:19.7. Princeton won the race with a time of 8:05.8 and Brown was second at 8:15.8.
Ohio State raced two boats in a novice four race. The Buckeye boats places fourth (8:02.0) and fifth (8:15.7) in the competition. Brown’s two crews took first and second with times of 7:35.2 and 7:41.5. Princeton had a single boat in the race and placed third at 7:56.6.
The Buckeyes will next travel to Charlottesville, Va., to race No. 3 Virginia and Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Duals March 31.
