COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s basketball coach Jim Foster has signed a new contract that will take him through the 2014-15 season with the Buckeyes. The agreement includes a one-year incentive extension for winning the 2007 Big Ten regular-season title. The announcement was made Friday by Gene Smith, Ohio State athletics director, following the approval of the University’s Board of Trustees.
“Jim Foster continues to differentiate himself from his peers as a teacher and leader of our student-athletes,” said Smith. “It is a pleasure to work with him. He is a tremendous asset to our program.”
Earlier this week, Foster was named Big Ten coach of the year for the third time in as many seasons, a league first. He has guided the Buckeyes to three-consecutive regular-season conference championships. In those seasons, Foster has led the Buckeyes to an overall record of 85-10 (.895) and a Big Ten mark of 44-4 (.917).
“I am thankful for the opportunity Ohio State has given me,” Foster, who has an overall record of 632-255 (.713) in 29 seasons as a Division I head coach, said. “Columbus is a great fit for me and my family. Overall, it is a very exciting time to be a Buckeye.”
This season, the Buckeyes recorded a second-consecutive 15-1 mark in Big Ten play and, for the second season in a row, concluded the regular season with just a pair of losses overall.
Foster started his coaching career at St. Joseph’s University from 1978-1991 and then moved on to Vanderbilt for 11 campaigns from 1991-2002. Foster’s 632 career wins ranks 11th all-time in D-I.
Under the terms of his new contract, Foster’s compensation for the 2006-07 season will be $649,400, including a base salary of $350,000. That total represents an increase of $150,000 from his previous contract. He will receive $929,400 in total compensation in the final year of the agreement.
Foster ranks first in the Big Ten and fifth nationally among women’s basketball coaches in terms of base salary.
