COLUMBUS, Ohio Eleven Buckeyes recorded points, including Tom Fritsche’s 100th career point, as the Ohio State men’s hockey team opened the Ohio Hockey Classic with a 4-2 victory over No. 15 Harvard Saturday in Value City Arena.
The Buckeyes (6-13-2) will face No. 1-ranked Miami in the championship game at 8:05 p.m. Sunday in Value City Arena. The Crimson will meet St. Cloud State in the consolation game at 5:05 p.m.
The teams ended the first period with Harvard ahead, 2-1. The Crimson opened the scoring 4:32 into the game when Michael Biega scored on the rebound of a Jimmy Fraser shot. The squads then combined for two goals in the final minute of the period with the teams skating 4-on-4. Freshman Kyle Reed tallied for the Buckeyes at 19:06, putting in the rebound of a Patrick Schafer shot, with Corey Toy picking up the second assist. Reed’s tally initially was called no goal, but replay showed the goal was good. Harvard regained the lead just 52 seconds later, as Brian McCafferty scored following a scramble in front. Each team had 12 shots on goal in the period. The Buckeyes were unable to score on three power-play chances in the period.
Ohio State scored the only two goals of the second period to take a 3-2 lead into intermission. Jason DeSantis tallied 33 seconds into the period. His shot from the point deflected off two Harvard skates and behind goalie Kyle Richter. Tommy Goebel and Tom Fritsche assisted on the 4-on-4 goal, with Fritsche marking the 100th point of his Buckeye career. Shane Sims put the Buckeyes ahead at 7:40, taking a pass from John Albert as he skated into the Harvard zone, beating Richter low on the far side. DeSantis picked up the second assist on the tally. The Buckeyes stopped Harvard on all three power-play chances in the period, and Ohio State was outshot, 11-6.
Senior captain Matt McIlvane scored the only goal of the third period, tallying on the power play at 18:18 to seal the win. Junior Nick Biondo and freshman Peter Boyd assisted on goal, McIlvane’s third tally of the season. The teams combined for 27 shots in the period. Ohio State Postgame Quotes
John Markell, head coach
On the game
“Our kids did a great job remembering their systems and I want to congratulate Dustin (Carlson) on his first win and taking the opportunity. Our kids have matured in a whirlwind of a season. We haven’t had a weekend off and we’ve been playing good teams.”
On returning from break
“We talked to our seniors and told them they still have an opportunity to do some great things for this hockey program. I credit the kids with this win. It was a good hockey game and I liked the way they played.”
On Dustin Carlson
“I wasn’t sure how he was going to play but he is a competitor.”
On the Ohio Hockey Classic
“It was nice to play a nonconference team and a good team with Harvard ranked 15th.”
Tom Fritsche, senior forward
On the game
“We felt good about ourselves because we knew Harvard’s second goal was just a bad bounce so we stayed positive in the locker room between the first and second periods.”
On scoring his 100th point
“I knew it was coming and I thought I was going to get it sooner. It wasn’t that big off a deal for me but it does take some pressure off.”
Dustin Carlson, freshman goalie
On the win
“It was great to get another opportunity to start. After the first period, I knew I would have to step it up if I wanted to play at this level.”
Harvard postgame quotes
Ted Donato, head coach
On the game
“I’m disappointed, obviously. Give Ohio State credit, they battled and won a lot more races to the puck and 50-50 chances. We looked loose defensively and like a team that was not prepared to play.”
On playing against a young goalie
“We wanted to make the goalie (Dustin Carlson) see a lot of pucks. He has not had a lot of game experience, but getting nearly four penalties in the first did not let us really get into it.”
On Ohio State
“Give Ohio State credit, they deserved to get the win and the chances during the game. From our end and our perspective, we need to play better.”
On the Ohio Hockey Classic
“Obviously the scheduling and the shuttling (between rinks) were not ideal, but we appreciate the opportunity to come out to a great university and compete in a great tournament.”
