COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to No. 1-ranked Miami, 3-2, in the championship game of the Ohio Hockey Classic Sunday night in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes (6-14-2) came from a goal down twice to tie the game, but the RedHawks’ Gary Steffes scored with 1:38 remaining in regulation to lift Miami (18-2) to its second OHC title.
Miami’s Ryan Jones opened the scoring 5:16 into the game, as he scored on the power play from right in front of the net. Buckeye freshman Kyle Reed tied the game 57 seconds later, as his shot from the left wing trickled through Miami goalie Jeff Zatkoff’s pads for his second goal of the weekend. Freshman Peter Boyd and senior Jason DeSantis assisted on the goal, which came at 6:13. Miami regained its lead when tournament MVP Jarod Palmer converted a 2-on-1 shorthanded break with Justin Mercier. Miami outshot Ohio State in the period, 7-6.
Buckeye freshman John Albert scored the only goal of the second period, taking a drop pass from senior Tommy Goebel and beating Zatkoff for his second goal of the season. Buckeye freshman goalie Dustin Carlson stopped all 12 RedHawk shots in the period. Ohio State put nine shots on net.
The score remained tied until Steffes’ shot deflected off a player in front and into the air before dropping into the net with Carlson screened to put Miami ahead at 18:22. The Buckeyes had 12 shots on net in the period and Miami had five shots on net. The Buckeyes had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:23 in the period, but were unable to convert and put just one shot on net.

Ohio State postgame quotes
John Markell, head coach
On the difference in the game
“Gary Steffes made a good play (for the game-winner). We probably could have stepped inside him, but that’s not what the difference was to me. The 5-on-3 was the difference for us. We put all of our older guys out and didn’t get anything. It was a wasted opportunity that could have made the difference for us. Our kids played hard, though.”
On the team
“Miami has a more mature team than ours and we’re learning to play with teams at that level. I thought it was one of the better weekends we’ve played at home in awhile. We could have won this game. We played better against Miami than we did last time. The young guys are figuring out what they can and can’t do and the older guys are starting to settle in. I did think we did a better job today.”
On goalie Dustin Carlson
“He played well. He had good feet and played hard. He did a great job in the situation he’s in and he’s building a good foundation for next weekend.”
Kyle Reed, freshman forward
On the game
“We were playing a team ranked number one in the nation and we were playing right there with them. (The seniors) told us to go out there and keep our heads up because they’re going to come at us.”
On being a freshman against the No. 1 team
“Eighteen games into the season and I think the freshman thing is out the window. If you’re playing at this level than you know everyone on the ice is going to be a good hockey player.”
Miami postgame quotes
Enrico Blasi, head coach
On the game
“I think people are underestimating how hard Ohio State plays and the way they are improving. I think the coaching staff is doing a good job motivating their team and that this game could have gone either way. You couldn’t ask for better college hockey than that. (Dustin) Carlson made some really big saves and I was proud of the way our guys played both last night in the third period and overtime and most of tonight.”
On Miami’s fans
“When you hear a big roar during the starting lineups it’s a big boost for the team. If you come to campus on a home night, our fans start lining up at 4 p.m. for a 7 p.m. game. We are blessed to have that community and student support.”
Jarod Palmer, sophomore forward and tournament MVP
On Miami’s power play
“I don’t know what it is about (Justin) Mercier and I, but on power plays we always seem to find each other and it is fun.”
On Ohio State
“Ohio State has really come together as a team since we saw them. They play tight in front of the net so they don’t give you much.”
Mitch Ganzak, senior defenseman
On the Ohio Hockey Classic
“You prepare for the team not for the venue because you have to play the game no matter where it is. This was for a championship and for just coming off Christmas break it was a good night for college hockey.”
