Ohio State Loses, 2-0, at Northwestern – Ohio State Buckeyes
10/5/2007 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio The Ohio State women’s soccer team was held scoreless on the road for the third time this season and the result was a 2-0 Big Ten Conference loss to Northwestern Friday in Evanston. The loss drops Ohio State’s records to 7-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference while Northwestern improves to 6-4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.
The first half was scoreless with Northwestern firing five shots with two of them on goal. The Buckeyes countered with just three shots and only one goal.
“Northwestern plays a very high line and our leading stat today was offside,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. “We had nine and Northwestern did not have any. The timing of our attack was off and that’s a two-part equation. Our runs were off and our passes were off.
“This should have been a game where our personalities excelled but it was just the opposite. We were allowed to get frustrated very early by being in the wrong position and offside.”
The Wildcats broke the deadlock by scoring early in the second half. Kelsey Hans sent a cross into the box that Shannon Schneeman headed past Ohio State goalkeeper Lauren Robertson for her seventh goal of the season.
The score stayed that way for the next 26 minutes before Northwestern’s Zendzi Neal delivered a cross that Krystal Patterson volleyed into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Ohio State managed just eight shots for the game and four on net in losing at Northwestern for the fifth time in seven tries. Overall, Northwestern has defeated Ohio State three consecutive times dating to 2004.
Ohio State, which started five freshmen, is now 0-4 on the road this season and 7-0-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“There is no doubt that playing on the road in the Big Ten is a huge challenge,” Walker said. “We are trying to find that pulse on the road with a lot of freshmen playing. It is a bit of a challenge and we just can not rely solely on winning at home.”
The Buckeyes will have another opportunity for that first road win of 2007 Sunday when they play Wisconsin in a 3 p.m. that will be televised by the Big Ten Network (BTN). This will be the team’s first appearance on BTN, which will be coming to Columbus next weekend to air the 1 p.m. game Oct. 14 against Michigan State.
