Athletes of the Week
Kaila Calhoun, a freshman on the women’s volleyball team, helped the Buckeyes to two road victories last week. She had a team-high 13 digs and handled 21 of 22 reception attempts (.955) against the Hawkeyes. She added three kills, an assist, an ace serve and a solo block against Iowa. Calhoun had her third consecutive double-figure dig match at Minnesota with 17. She handled 41 of 42 (team-high) (.976) reception attempts and equaled her career-high of nine assist blocks against the Gophers.
Calhoun added four kills and a career-high five assists in the match. For the weekend, she had a team-high 64 reception attempts with two errors (.969) and posted a team-high 30 digs for a 3.75 per game average. Calhoun shared team-high honors with 10 blocks (1-9) in the two matches.
Junior men’s cross country runner Jeff See raced his way to first-team all-conference honors, leading the Buckeyes and coming in sixth in a time of 23:56.43 at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 at The Ohio State University Golf Course.
Athletics Good Stuff
Men’s Basketball
Head Coach: Thad Matta
The basketball team was picked to finish third in the Big Ten Conference by a 22-member media panel, the Big Ten announced Oct. 28.
Senior guard Jamar Butler was tabbed a preseason first-team selection as well.
Ohio State will begin its 2007-08 campaign at 7 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 31 with exhibition action against Ashland at home in Value City Arena. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
The 2007-08 regular season begins Nov. 12-13 in the opening rounds of the Dick’s Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off. Ohio State will host the early rounds and will face Wisconsin-Green Bay at 9 p.m. Nov. 12 in Value City Arena. That game will be televised by ESPN2.

Women’s Basketball

The Buckeyes were picked to finish a top of the Big Ten Conference standings by the league coaches and media panel Oct. 28.
Farm Wade Trophy candidate and senior guard Marscilla Packer was a preseason All-Big Ten pick by the coaches and media. Junior forward Star Allen was an All-Big Ten selection by the media.

Men’s Cross Country
Head Coach: Robert Gary
Ohio State finished third as host of the 2007 Big Ten Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 at The Ohio State University Golf Course. The Buckeyes have finished in the Top 3 at the conference meet in four of the last six seasons.
The Buckeyes, which finished behind No. 6 Wisconsin and No. 22 Minnesota, beat out No. 10 Michigan and their 91 point total was their lowest since finishing second in the championships in 2002.
Junior Jeff See raced his way to first-team All-Big honors, leading the Buckeyes and coming in sixth in a time of 23:56.43. Senior co-captain John Ealy earned second-team All-Big Ten honors with an 11th-place finish in a time of 24:08.22. Fellow senior and co-captain Alex Bailey grabbed second-team All-Big Ten honors as well with a 13th-place finish, coming in with a time of 24:08.22.

Women’s Cross Country
Head Coach: Karen Dennis
Freshmen Ashley Chirco and Ellen Birmingham were the top finishers for the Buckeyes at the 2007 Big Ten Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 at The Ohio State University Golf Course. Chirco finished in a time of 22:30.86 (75th) and Birmingham crossed the line in 22:32.26 (76th).
As a team, the Buckeyes finished 11th.

Fencing
Head Coach: Vladimir Nazlymov
Ohio State wrapped up the OSU Duals with a perfect 18-0 combined team record Oct. 27 in St. John Arena. The shutout marked the fifth-consecutive year the Buckeyes have gone unbeaten at their home event.
The women’s team was led by the senior sabre duo of Eileen Grench and Siobhan Byrne, who each went unbeaten, leading the sabre team to an 88-2 record against the opposition. Kaela Brendler and the women’s epee squad shut out seven opponents, losing only three bouts all day. In total, the women’s team recorded a 27-0 record with shutouts against 10 schools.
The men’s team, despite the absence of reigning foil national champion Andras Horanyi, was equally impressive. Senior Will Jeter lost only one match and led the foil unit to an 85-5 mark on the day. The sabre unit was also missing All-Americans Sergey Smirnoff and Mikhail Momtselidze, but still managed to lose only 11 matches on the day.

Field Hockey (6-11; 2-4 Big Ten)

Ohio State dropped a close 1-0 decision to No. 9 Penn State in State College, Pa., Oct. 26. The game was televised on the Big Ten Network.
Senior Yesenia Luces was selected to play in the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game Nov. 17 in College Park, Md. The game, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. is part of the 2007 NCAA Championships hosted by the University of Maryland, Nov. 16-18.
The Buckeyes will host the 2007 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament at North Turf Field, Nov. 1-4.

The Buckeyes traveled to State College, Pa., for a match up against No. 24/25 Penn State in primetime Oct. 27. Ohio State recorded a 37-17 victory to remain undefeated in front of the second-largest crowd in Beaver Stadium.
Ohio State has won a school-record 27-consecutive regular-season games.
The Buckeyes have won a school-record 19-consecutive Big Ten Conference games, dating to the 17-10 loss at Penn State Oct. 8, 2005. The win over the Spartans broke the former record for consecutive conference wins (17), set from 1954-56, 1967-69 and 1974-76. The 19-consecutive wins by the Buckeyes ties the conference record set by Michigan between 1990-92.
Ohio State is now 66-9-1 when ranked No. 1 in the country.

Men’s Golf
Head Coach: Jim Brown
Ohio State posted a third-place finish at the Landfall Tradition Oct. 28 in Wilmington, N.C. The Buckeyes finished the three-day, 54-hole event at 11-over-par with a total of 875 strokes.
Ohio State started the day trailing by 10 strokes, but was able to make up seven of them to finish three shots back of the leaders. The team shot
6-over-par 294 for the day, the third lowest team score of the final round.
Kyle Coconis (-4) and Patrick Simard (-1) finished under par for the Buckeyes for Top 4 finishes.

Women’s Golf
Head Coach: Therese Hession
Ohio State concluded its fall season Oct. 28 with a seventh-place finish at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The Buckeyes shot a final round team score of 311 on the par 72, 6,072-yard Jack Nicklaus Course, recording an overall score of 910 (297-302-311).
Junior captain Gemma Webster led the Buckeyes throughout all three rounds of the tournament. The native of Glasgow, Scotland, shot a 77 in the third round to bring her tournament total to 224 (+8). Webster’s score earned her a spot in the Top 15, finishing tied for 13th overall.
The Buckeyes open their spring schedule when they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif., to host the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, Feb. 11-13.
No. 4 Men’s Gymnastics
Head Coach: Miles Avery
Last year, the squad posted a 3.4 cumulative grade point average (GPA), interrupting Stanford’s four-year streak as the top academic team in the nation.
To recognize the Buckeyes on their outstanding accomplishments, The Ohio State University is hosting an afternoon celebration to honor the team from 2-4 p.m. Nov. 2 at the South Campus Gateway.
At the event, guest speakers, including Ohio State Athletics Director Gene Smith, as well as head coach Miles Avery and former OSU gymnasts. In addition, the team will hold an autograph session starting at 3:15 p.m.
Men’s Hockey (2-4-0; 0-2-0 CCHA)

Ohio State dropped two decisions to No. 10 Minnesota at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn., Oct. 25 and Oct. 26.
The Buckeyes have played a team ranked in the Top 15 in each of their last five games (No. 15 Wisconsin Oct. 13; No. 2 Miami Oct. 19/21; No. 10 Minnesota).
Freshman Peter Boyd scored for the Buckeyes in the first game to tie for the team lead in goal scoring (2) with senior Tommy Goebel.
Freshman Kyle Reed was credited with an assist on Boyd’s goal to become the fifth Buckeye freshman to get a point this season, joining Boyd (2g, 1a), John Albert (2a), Patrick Schafer (1g) and Sergio Somma (1g).

No. 10 Women’s Hockey (3-3-2; 2-2-2 WCHA)

After posting its first scoreless tie in program history against North Dakota Oct. 26, Ohio State made a three-goal rally in the third period against the Fighting Sioux in game two Oct. 27 for the 4-3 victory in Grand Forks, N.D.
Junior forward Morgan Marziali scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation to give the Buckeyes the win and three of four points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series.
The OSU win snaps a three-game unbeaten streak for the Fighting Sioux.

No. 20 Men’s Soccer (10-3-3; 3-1-1 Big Ten)

The Buckeyes played their final regular-season home match at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Oct. 27 with a 1-0 overtime victory over Michigan.
Prior to the game, Ohio State celebrated senior day. The 2007 senior class includes Xavier Balc, Eric Brunner, Eric Edwards, Ryan Kustos, Casey Latchem, Kyle Retzlaff and Steven Traeger.
The senior class tied the program record for wins with 44.
Balc recorded his 11th assist in the match, setting the program’s single-season record. Balc already owns the OSU record for career assists with 32.

Women’s Soccer (11-7; 5-4 Big Ten)

The 2007 Buckeyes became the first team in OSU women’s soccer history to win its first 10 games at home after they beat Indiana, 1-0, on a goal by freshman Alex Burzynski Oct. 26 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Ohio State then faced No. 4 Purdue at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium and dropped a 3-1 decision. Senior Keiana Mitchell scored for the Buckeyes against the Boilermakers.
Ohio State wraps up the regular season at home at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 against No. 7 Penn State. The day also will serve as senior day for Lara Dickenmann, Amanda Ball, Keiana Mitchell, Carla Arbulu, Kate Linehan and Alyxandra Portier.

Women’s Swimming and Diving (1-1; 0-0 Big Ten)

Ohio State defeated Kenyon College, 207.00-87.00, but lost to Ohio University, 152.00-148.00, in a double dual meet Oct. 27 in Gambier, Ohio.
The Buckeyes won seven of the 12 individual swimming events and had five second-place finishes in support. Coach Vince Panzano’s diving squad swept all three places on both the one- and three-meter boards.

Men’s Tennis
Head Coach: Ty Tucker
Ohio State’s Justin Kronauge had a successful tournament run at the 2007 ITA Midwest Regional Oct. 22 when he won the singles and doubles events.
As the No. 13 seed, Kronauge beat teammate and No. 2 seed Bryan Koniecko 7-6, 6-3 in the semifinals before winning the singles title after Ryan Rowe of Illinois had to withdraw because of injury. Kronauge then paired with senior Drew Eberly to win the doubles title as the No. 1 seed.

Women’s Tennis

Ohio State finished the fourth and final day of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., Oct. 21.
Junior Angela DiPastina was the lone Buckeye to compete on the final day and faced third-seed Cosmina Ciobanu of Notre Dame. After defeating 15th-seed, Milica Veselinovic of Iowa, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, to reach the round of 16, DiPastina could not duplicate that success against Ciobanu and fell, 6-3, 6-4.

Women’s Volleyball (11-10; 5-7 Big Ten)
Head Coach: Jim Stone
The Buckeyes went 2-0 during the weekend of Oct. 26-27, sweeping Iowa, 3-0, before rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat No. 22 Minnesota, 3-2, on the road.
OSU setter Briana McCarthy had 13 points with 10 kills, two ace serves and two assist blocks adding 10 digs for her first career triple-double against the Gophers.
Eight assist blocks from Danielle Meyer against the Hawkeyes and Gophers gives her 395 for her career and has moved her to second on the Ohio State career list. She passed Suzie Stiling (1999-02), who had 392.

Ohio State held its Scarlet and Gray wrestle offs Oct. 25 in St. John Arena. Team Scarlet posted an 18-11 victory over the Gray squad.
A pair of underclassmen in freshman Nikko Triggas and sophomore Lance Palmer paced team Scarlet with two pins.
