COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State lost to Iowa, 1-0, in overtime Sunday in Iowa City on a goal scored by Sarah Stephenson with just 45 seconds to play in the first overtime. The loss dropped Ohio State into a fourth-place tie with Illinois in the conference standings with 4-3-0 league marks. The Buckeyes are 10-6-0 overall. Iowa is 7-5-4 overall and 3-4-0 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes had three shots on goal to none for Iowa in the first half but couldn’t put any into the net. Lara Dickenmann, Caitlin Colfer and Lisa Collison all had shots that Iowa goalkeeper Kali Feiereisel was able to make saves on. Ohio State had four total shots in the half while Iowa had three.
The game remained scoreless throughout the second half. Iowa sent seven shots toward the Ohio State goal in the half, but only two were on goal and goalkeeper Lauren Robertson handled them both. Ohio State responded with four shots in the half with two on goal. Dickenmann and Shawn Skladany each had shots saved by Feiereisel.
Then came overtime, something Ohio State has had great success with in 2007 with a 4-0-0 record. Ohio State had one shot in the period, but inside of a minute to play Stephenson scored unassisted for her second goal of the season.
Dickenmann led Ohio State for the game with five shots and now has 52 on the season and 278 for her career, second to Lisa Grubb’s 325 shots.
It was a disappointing end to a weekend that started in a most positive way for the Buckeyes, who defeated Minnesota, 2-1, in overtime Friday. In that game, the Buckeyes’ Amanda Ball tied the game in the 84th minute and Courtney Jenkins won it in the overtime. It was the team’s first win on the road this season and it is something the Buckeyes needed with the Big Ten Tournament, set for Nov. 8-11 in Minneapolis, the team’s next opportunity to play on the road.
Ohio State plays its final three Big Ten Conference regular season games in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, where the team is 9-0-0 this season, and the games will be against the top three teams in the standings and all are nationally ranked.
