Tessa Bonhomme Scores Hat Trick, But No. 9/10 Ohio State Falls to No. 8/10 Minnesota, 7-4 – Ohio State Buckeyes

Olivia Antognoli nets first career point on goal in the second period
COLUMBUS, Ohio Senior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme collected her first career hat trick, but it was not enough as the No. 9/10 Ohio State women’s hockey team fell to No. 8/10 Minnesota by a score of 7-4 Friday at the home opener at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes are 1-3-1 overall with a 0-2-1 record in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota is 3-1-1 with a 1-1-1 mark in the conference.
The Golden Gophers came out firing and scored three goals before the game even hit the seven-minute mark. Kelli Blankenship got Minnesota on the board just 2:22 into the game, followed by goals by Gigi Marvin at 4:42 and Emily West on the power play at 6:25.
Ohio State responded at 7:07 when Bonhomme scored her first goal of the game. Junior Hayley Klassen fed the puck up the Bonhomme, who carried it along the boards into the OSU zone and blasted from just over the blue line, zipping it five-hole on Minnesota goaltender Kim Hanlon.
Bonhomme cut the lead to 3-2 at the 11:57 mark when she tallied a shorthanded goal. She skated up with the puck after picking it up from OSU goaltender Deidre Facklis. Bonhomme carried it all the way toward the Minnesota net and flicked it into the goal on a wrist shot from the right side. It was her second shorthander in as many games the first two of her career.
Minnesota added two more goals in the period to take a 5-2 lead into the first intermission. The Gophers scored both of the goals on the power play, with Anya Miller recording a 5-on-3 lamplighter at 15:39 and Erica McKenzie scoring 5-on-4 just 32 seconds later.
The assist for Facklis was her first career point picking it up in her first career minutes played. She entered the period after Bonhomme’s first goal. Facklis played a total of 12:53, making 10 saves with two goals allowed.
Play settled down in the second period with Ohio State recording the only goal in the stanza to move the score to 5-3. During a scramble in front of the net, junior Olivia Antognoli jabbed the puck in for her first career goal and point. The junior from Granite City, Ill., was assisted by sophomore Michele Tonnessen and freshman Jenna Kilpatrick. The helpers were the first of the season for both, with Kilpatrick also recording her first point as a Buckeye.
Junior goaltender Liana Bonanno returned to the OSU net at the beginning of the second period. She started the game, but came out after the first 7:07. She went on to play the last two periods and made a total of 29 saves.
In the opening minutes of the third period, Bonhomme scored her third goal to complete the hat trick and cut the Minnesota lead to 5-4. She scored at 4:26 from the right side of the net with assists from senior Mallory Peckels and freshman Shannon Reilly. The helper was the first of Reilly’s career while Peckels picked up her fourth of the season.
The Gophers regained the two-goal lead just seconds later at 4:41 when Bobbi Ross scored from directly in front of the Buckeye goal. Minnesota then put the game away on a Whitney Graft power play goal at 10:38 for a final score of 7-4.
With her three goals, Bonhomme took the team lead in goals this season with five and increased her team-leading point total to nine.
Overall, Ohio State had 27 shots on goal to Minnesota’s 46. The Gophers were 4-of-10 on the power play while the Buckeyes were 0-of-4. Bonanno registered the loss to move to 1-3-1 this season. Hanlon of Minnesota made 23 saves and is 2-0-1.
The Buckeyes and Gophers will conclude their series Saturday at 7:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
