COLUMBUS, Ohio – A total of 17 former Ohio State student-athletes received degrees at summer commencement, held Aug. 27 in the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Among the graduates were football All-American A.J. Hawk, men’s gymnastics All-American Randy Monahan and Linnea Nygren of the OSU rifle team, who won athletic and academic all-conference honors in her career.
The 17 graduates join 108 former Buckeyes who received diplomas at spring quarter commencement in Ohio Stadium June 11.
Among the most recent graduates who returned to Ohio State to complete their degree were former men’s basketball standout Chris Jent and football notables Dick Schafrath and Roger Harper. Jent, a part of two Big Ten championship teams (1991-92), was a student manager for Buckeye men’s basketball coach Thad Matta last season while he finished his coursework. Schafrath helped lead Ohio State to the 1957 national championship and served as captain in 1958 before playing for the Cleveland Browns and later serving as a senator in the Ohio state legislature. Harper was a 1992 first-team All-Big Ten selection at defensive back.
Hawk was the 2005 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, a two-time All-American and completed his course work this past summer while beginning his pro career for the Green Bay Packers at the same time. Monahan was a seven-time All-American and a two-time Big Ten Gymnast of the Year.
Nygren was a second-team All-Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference award winner three times and was a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
