Athletes of the Week
Senior defensive back Antonio Smith collected seven tackles andreturned an interception 55 yards for a touchdown last Saturday tohelp lead the Buckeyes to a 28-6 win over No. 24 Penn State in OhioStadium. The Columbus native, whose 20 tackles rank fourth on theteam, was named the team’s defensive player of the week for thefirst time in his career. Junior Yesenia Luces totaled nine pointsin two games this week as the field hockey team remained undefeatedat 7-0. For her efforts, Luces was named Co-Big Ten Player of theWeek Monday. The midfielder had three goals on five shots and addedthree assists as well. She scored the game-winning overtime goalSunday at Iowa for the 4-3 victory. Luces also had another goal andassist vs. the Hawkeyes. Earlier in the week, she scored a goal andtwo assists in OSU’s 6-1 win at Ohio. She leads the team in points(20) and goals (7), and is second in assists (6).
This is the third conference player of the week selection for Luces and fifth weekly honor for a Buckeye this season.
Athletics Good Stuff
The sixth-ranked field hockey team won its seventh game in arow with a 4-3 overtime victory at No. 20 Iowa to open up the BigTen schedule Sunday in Iowa City, Iowa. The win ties the Buckeyesbest start in the history of the program and at 7-0, Ohio State isone of just two undefeated teams in the country.
Junior Yesenia Luces scored the game-winning goal 7:26 into overtime. It was her second goal of the game. Also scoring for the Buckeyes were sophomore Linda Haussener, who has scored seven goals in the last five games, and senior Lauren Kruse. Luces also had an assist in the game along with senior Saskia Mueller and sophomore Emily Mikac. Freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Quintiliani made seven saves and picked up the win to improve to 7-0.
Ohio State aims for a record-setting eighth win in a row Wednesday when the team plays Ball State at North Turf Field at 3 p.m.
Women’s soccer forward Lisa Grubb became the OSU all-timepoints leader (84) after tallying an assist against Indiana Sept.24 in Bloomington, Ind. Grubb, a senior tri-captain from Portage,Mich., is just one helper shy of tying the Ohio State career recordfor assists (23). Grubb already is the OSU all-time goals leaderwith 31 scores.
The Buckeyes return to action in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Friday when they host Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m. The Scarlet and Gray resume action at 1 p.m. Sunday at JOMS against Northwestern.
The 13th-ranked women’s volleyball (11-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten)opened Big Ten play with a 0-3 (21-30, 29-31, 16-30) loss at No. 2Penn State and won 3-1 (25-30, 30-25, 30-24, 30-26) at Iowa.Danielle Meyer had 16 points and Anna Szerszen 13 at Penn State.Meyer had 31.5 points at Iowa with Szerszen adding 25.5 and BrianaMcCarthy 13. Ami Stevens had a season-high 26 digs against theHawkeyes.
Ohio State continues on the road this week with matches at No. 11 Purdue Friday and at Indiana Saturday. The Purdue match will be broadcast by ESPN2 on Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The women’s ice hockey team opens its 2006-07 season Saturdaywith an exhibition game against Wilfrid Laurier, a Canadianuniversity located in Waterloo, Ontario. The game begins at 1 p.m.at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes are coming off a 13-18-5 season witha fifth-place finish in the WCHA (10-15-3). Ohio State lost its topscorer from 2005-06, Jana Harrigan, but returns eight players withdouble-digit point totals, including First Team All-WCHA honoreeAmber Bowman. Also returning is senior goaltender Erika Vanderveer,who finished last season with a 2.66 goals-against-average and .912save percentage while going 9-12-5.
The Buckeyes open their regular-season schedule Oct. 6-7 with a non-conference series against Northeastern. Games begin at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at OSU Ice Rink.
The men’s soccer team hosts No. 21 Akron at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdaybefore getting back into Big Ten play at league-leader Penn StateSunday. The Buckeyes (3-5-2, 0-1-0 Big Ten) are led by juniorXavier Balc, whose six goals rank among the conference leaders. Thewomen’s tennis team competed at two tournaments last weekend,traveling to Philadelphia for the Cissie Leary Invitational andWinston-Salem, N.C., for the Deacon Classic hosted by Wake Forest.Freshman Ally Mueller led the Buckeyes with three singles wins onthe weekend, going 3-1 at the WFU tourney to win the consolationfinal. The doubles tandem of Julie Voss and Kristin Messmer was aperfect 3-0, winning the Flight C doubles championship at WFU.
The team returns to action at the ITA Midwest Regional in East Lansing, Mich., Oct. 19-24.
The softball team hosts the Sixth Annual Ohio CollegiateCharity Classic Saturday and Sunday at Fred Beekman Park on westcampus. The 19-team event raised more than $20,000 last year forthe Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research and aims tosurpass that mark this year. The men’s lacrosse team will hostJohns Hopkins in the second annual Michael R. Breschi BuckeyeClassic at 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium inColumbus. The event is named in honor of Michael R. Breschi, 3, thelate son of Ohio State head coach Joe Breschi, who diedaccidentally in March 2004. Tickets for the game are $5, with allproceeds benefiting the Michael Breschi Scholarship Fund at OhioState. The scholarship is awarded annually to a member of theBuckeye men’s lacrosse team. The men’s hockey team starts officialpractice Saturday and will open the season with an exhibition gameagainst Guelph at 8:05 p.m. Oct. 7. The regular season begins witha two-game home series against Lake Superior State Oct. 13-14. TheBuckeyes and Lakers will meet at 7:05 p.m. both nights in VCA.
Senior defenseman Sean Collins has been voted team captain for the 2006-07 season by his teammates, while senior forward Mathieu Beaudoin and junior forward Matt McIlvane were selected as alternate captains in the vote by the squad Tuesday.
Collins, a native of Troy, Mich., was an alternate captain for the squad last season. He is a two-time honorable mention All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association selection and was a finalist for CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman accolades in 2005. A four-time CCHA player of the week, Collins played in all 39 games for the Buckeyes last season, leading the defensemen with 18 points. He has played in 120 games for the Scarlet and Gray and has 60 career points, including 19 goals and 41 assists.
Beaudoin, from Sherbrooke, Quebec, played in 32 games a year ago, posting eight goals and 16 points. He was a second team All-CCHA choice as a sophomore in 2004-05 when he had a team-best 23 goals and added 11 assists for 34 points. In 112 games for Ohio State, Beaudoin has 38-26-64 totals and 17 power-play goals.
Naperville, Ill., native McIlvane saw action in 37 games a year ago and had a career-best 10 assists and 13 points. In his first two years with the squad, he has played in 70 games, recording four goals, 15 assists and 19 points.
Baseball head coach Bob Todd welcomed 12 freshmen and twotransfers to campus when his team reported for fall practice Sept.11 at Bill Davis Stadium. Several of the new student-athletes hadparents who attended Ohio State, including two – D.J. Hanlin andMatt Streng – whose fathers played baseball for the Buckeyes. MikeHanlin played at Ohio State from 1974-78, while Terry Streng playedfor the Scarlet and Gray from 1970-73. Another member of the class,Brian DeLucia, is the brother of OSU senior Dan DeLucia, a 10-gamewinner for the Buckeyes last season. Eleven members of the newclass hail from the Buckeye State, including seven players who arefrom Central Ohio. Additionally, Todd was able to bring in twostudent-athletes from Pennsylvania and another from North Carolina.Cory Rupert was the Ohio Division I Player of the Year in 2006. The entire baseball team continues fall practice through Friday, Oct. 6, before splitting into two squads for the annual Scarlet and Gray World Series, Oct. 9-13, at Bill Davis Stadium. The teams will play a best three-of-five intra-squad series this year. Each game will begin at 3 p.m. with the exception of the Wednesday game, which will be played under the lights at 6:30 p.m. Ohio State opens the 2007 season in its own tournament, Feb. 23-25, at the New York Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. James Madison, Kansas State and Seton Hall will join the Buckeyes at the event.
The women’s golf team will travel to the 2006 WolverineInvitational this weekend. The 10-team field will compete at theU-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich. Baylor, Eastern Michigan,Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Ohio State,Oklahoma, Southern Methodist and Toledo will play 54 holes in thetwo-day event. The U-M Golf Course will be set up for a par 71 and6,036 yards. Men’s swimming head coach, Bill Wadley, was re-electedas president of the American Swimming Coaches Association earlierthis month. This marks the second consecutive year Wadley hasserved as president for the ASCA. Previous to his election aspresident, Wadley served as the vice-president and board member forthe organization, as well other swimming committees such as the USASwimming Board of Directors. Wadley is currently in his 18th seasonwith the Buckeyes. He has an overall career record of 176-37,including his Ohio State record of 155-27. The women’s basketballteam, which has won back-to-back Big Ten championships, wasrecognized Saturday at the Penn State – Ohio State football game atOhio Stadium. The Buckeyes finished the 2005-06 season with a 29-3record, which included a program-best 20-game win streak.
