COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team defeated Washington by a score of 2-1 Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the final game of the Ohio State Tournament. Along with the upset of No. 10 Cal, the Buckeyes went 2-0 in the event to take the tournament title. Dayton and California finished the tournament at 1-1, while Washington was 0-2.
OSU is now 4-2-1 this season, while the Huskies fell to even on the year at 4-4-0.
“This is fantastic,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach said about winning the Ohio State Tournament. “We defeated two good Pac-10 teams. We’ve traveled out west to play both Cal and Washington, and it was good to face them at home. It’s always a little easier playing teams on your field.”
After a scoreless first half in which Ohio State out-shot Washington 7-3, the Buckeyes quickly got on the board in the opening minutes of the second half. Junior Lara Dickenmann (Kriens, Switzerland/Kantousschule Luzern) fired a shot at UW goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen who knocked it down for a save. Freshman Ali Schwach (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Paul Academy) picked up the rebound and blasted it in to give OSU a 1-0 lead at 46:57.
The Buckeyes doubled their lead to 2-0 at 79:09 when sophomore Lisa Collison (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Michael’s) scored her third goal of the season. Senior defenseman Melissa Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) fed the ball from midfield to a streaking Collison who dribbled it toward the Husky net and blasted it in.
Washington cut the score to 2-1 at 86:32 when Melissa Beal crossed the ball to Veronica Perez who kicked it in from the left side. The Huskies continued to attack in the remaining minutes, but the Buckeye defense held strong to secure the 2-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Robertson (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) continued her solid play in net with five saves to improve to 4-2-1 this season. Rasmussen of Washington made nine saves, but picked up the loss to move to 4-4-0.
Overall, the Buckeyes had a 15-7 advantage in shots with a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Washington had eight fouls to Ohio State’s five.
For their outstanding play on the weekend, Dickenmann, Miller and junior defenseman Keiana Mitchell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincy Country Day) were named to the all-tournament team.
Up next for OSU, the Buckeyes open their Big Ten schedule with two games on the road. Ohio State faces Purdue Sept. 22 before traveling to Indiana Sept. 24. The Buckeyes will then return to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sept. 29 to take on Wisconsin at 7:30 p.m.
