Buckeyes Have Strong Opening Day at NCAA Rowing Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Ohio State rowing team completed a strong first day of the 2006 NCAA Championships Friday by finishing first in the second varsity eight heat and second in the first varsity eight and first varsity four heats. With the first-place finish in the second varsity eight heat, the Buckeyes advance to the Grand Final Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
The NCAA championships are being hosted by the Princeton National Rowing Association and Rutgers University and held at a 2,000-meter course on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. All three NCAA divisions (I, II, and III) are competing for their respective national titles at the regatta.
The seventh-ranked first varsity eight boat raced in the first event of the day, finishing second in Heat I. Charlott Goldstein (Fr., Berlin, Germany), Jana Schiller (Sr., Marquardt, Germany), Susanne Herbrand (Fr., Magdeburg, Germany), Ninett Kossowsky (Sr., Leipzig, Germany), Gabriele Albertaviciute (So., Vilnius, Lithuania), Beth Tompkins (Sr., Westerville, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Jr., Giessen, Germany), Jessica Shepherd (Jr., Richmond, Ohio) and coxswain Colleen Saville (Fr., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished with a time of 6:43.370 to advance to the semifinal race Saturday. Brown took first at 6:41.497 and Southern California and Yale tied for third at 6:44.812 to also advance. Washington (6:52.994) and Stanford (6:58.892) rounded out the heat. In a tight Heat I of the second varsity eight, the Buckeyes battled closely and made a surge to cross the line first and automatically qualify for the Grand Final Sunday. The boat of Lavinia Tinelli (Fr., Rome, Italy), Andrea Dymalski (So., Bremen, Germany), Simone Haubner (So., Leipzig, Germany), Justine Mahler (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Katie Poling (Sr., Elyria, Ohio), Zuzanna Trzcinska (Fr., Ilawa, Poland), Briony Clare (Jr., Sydney, Australia), Olga Grigorieva (Jr., Moscow, Russia) and coxswain Sarah Obee (Sr., Toledo, Ohio) clocked in at 6:54.456. Ohio State edged California (6:56.209), Princeton (6:56.439) and Washington State (6:56.710) with Tennessee (7:02.498) and Stanford (7:02.788) completing the heat.
The first varsity four placed second in its Heat I to move to the repechage race Saturday. After struggling out the gates, the boat of Patricia Goodeman (Jr., Waterville, Ohio), Mary Sheehan (Jr., Johnstown, Pa.), Peta-Leigh Dakyns (Fr., Johannesburg, South Africa), Sarah Mominee (Sr., Martin, Ohio) and coxswain Susie Wilson (Jr., Fredericktown, Ohio) climbed back to overtake Washington halfway through the race and finish second behind Brown with a time of 7:34.484. The Bears took first at 7:30.177 and the Huskies finished third at 7:37.508. Yale (7:41.263), Tennessee (7:41.764) and Notre Dame (7:45.329) rounded out the heat.
Ohio State will compete in two races Saturday. The first varsity four will race in the repechage with the top two boats from each of the two repechages advancing to the Grand Final with the next three racing in the Petite Final. The Buckeye’s first varsity eight will race in the semifinal. The top three in the two semifinal races move to the Grand Final while the remainder race in the Petite Final. All Division I Grand and Petite Finals will take place Sunday.
