Four OSU Boats Advance to Grand Finals at Aramark Central/South Region Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four boats from the No. 4 Ohio State rowing team advanced to their respective Grand Finals at the 2006 Aramark Central/South Region Championships Saturday in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Buckeyes, who won the Big Ten championship two weeks ago, are looking for their fourth-consecutive regional title with the final races set for Sunday.
The Buckeyes finished first out of six boats in four semifinal A/B races to advance to the Grand Finals in the first and second varsity eight, first varsity four and open four races. The top three finishers in each `A’ and `B’ semifinal advance to the Grand Finals while the next three race in the Petite Finals. The top three in the `C’ and `D’ semifinals race in the Final C while the next three race in the Final D.
The top-seeded OSU first and second varsity eight boats each placed first in their semifinal A/B races. The 1V8 boat clocked in at 6:38.30 to edge Notre Dame in second at 6:38.96. The 2V8 boat finished first with a time of 6:54.90 while Big Ten foe Michigan State crossed next at 6:56.15.
Ohio State’s first varsity four also edged the Spartans to finish first at 7:55.10 in their semifinal A/B race. MSU was second at 7:58.70. The Buckeyes, who had two boats competing in the open four heats, were first in the open four semifinal race with the (A) boat clocking in at 7:47.05, well ahead of second-place Wisconsin at 7:57.05.
The Aramark Central/South Region championships continue Sunday with the Grand Finals, Petite Finals, Final C and Final D races. The Ohio State (B) open four boat and the first novice eight will compete in the Final C events of their respective races. Final races begin at 9 a.m. (CT).
