COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s hockey senior goalie Dave Caruso and defensemen junior Sean Collins and senior Nate Guenin received honorable mention All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association accolades, the league announced Wednesday.
The CCHA coaches select a first and a second team, based on performance in league games (coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players). The next six point totals, regardless of position, are named honorable mention.
This is the second-consecutive season Caruso, from Roswell, Ga., has earned honorable mention accolades. He ended the 2005-06 conference season with a 2.25 goals-against average and .912 save percentage. During the season, he tied the Ohio State single-season record with a league-best five shutouts and his 2.15 overall goals-against average is the third-best mark in program history. Caruso received three votes from the league coaches for first-team accolades.
In his career, Caruso played in 96 games for the Buckeyes. He ends his career as Ohio State’s leader in goals-against average (2.07) and with the Top 3 single-season goals-against averages (1.97/2004, 2.14/2005, 2.15/2006). Caruso owns the single-season wins record (25 in 2005) and is tied for the career (11) and single-season (5 in 2006) shutout records. He is tied for third in career wins (52) and is ninth with 2,213 career saves.
Collins, a Troy, Mich., native, also is an honorable mention choice for the second-consecutive year. He led the Buckeye blueliners with 18 points, tying for third on the squad overall, while playing in all 39 games. His seven goals tied for fifth among the Buckeyes. Collins, who had 13 points in conference play to tie for fourth among CCHA defensemen, was +13 both in conference play and overall during 2005-06. He received two first-place votes for all-conference honors. Collins, an alternate captain for the squad in 2005-06, has played in 120 games as a Buckeye, with a 19-41-60 line and +29 rating.
Aliquippa, Pa., native Guenin, the Buckeye captain this season, earned conference accolades for the third time in his career. He was a second-team choice last season and an honorable-mention selection as a sophomore in 2004. He ended this season with 11 assists and points while playing in all 39 games.
Guenin, who also earned CCHA academic honors during his career, played in 151 games as a Buckeye, posting 47 assists and 53 points, as well as a +23 rating. He ends his career fifth in Buckeye history with 400 penalty minutes.
