COLUMBUS, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State rowing team plays hosts to the sixth-annual ACC/Big Ten Duals Saturday at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio. The regatta begins at 9 a.m. with the Buckeyes welcoming fellow Big Ten teams Michigan and Michigan State, along with Duke and Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The regatta consists of first and second varsity eight, first and second varsity four and first and second novice eight races in the morning session beginning at 9 a.m. and the afternoon session beginning at 1 p.m.
Tough Competition
The Buckeyes face some tough competition at the ACC/Big Ten Duals with three teams ranked in the USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eight Top 20 poll released March 29. No. 7 Ohio State welcomes No. 3 Virginia, No. 12 Michigan and No. 13 Michigan State. Duke is receiving votes.
Last Time Out
Ohio State opened the 2006 season at the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic March 25-26 at Redwood Shores in Redwood City, Calif. The first and second varsity eight boats competed in three duals, facing California and Washington Saturday and host Stanford Sunday.
The Buckeyes’ first varsity eight defeated Washington after falling to California in their first race. The squad was edged by Stanford the following day. OSU’s second varsity eight dropped all three races.
Spanning the Globe
The 2006 Ohio State rowing roster consists of student-athletes from around the world. The 35 members of the team are from eight countries, including the United States. Germany has the largest representation from outside the U.S. with eight rowers. There also are Buckeyes from Australia, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and South Africa.
The U.S. Buckeyes represent six different states. There are 16 Ohio natives, with athletes also from Connecticut, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The 2005 ACC/Big Ten Duals
Last season, then-No. 5 Ohio State first varsity eight opened the 2005 season by defeating No. 6 Virginia and No. 17 Duke at the fifth-annual ACC/Big Ten Duals.
Overall, Ohio State’s varsity squad finished the day 4-6 and the novice team went 3-1. On the day, Virginia led all four teams posting a 12-4 record. Ohio State tallied a 7-7 record, while Michigan went 6-8 and Duke ended the day 0-8.
In the morning session, Ohio State swept Duke in all four races, including the first and second varsity eights and in the first and second novice races. In the afternoon, the Buckeyes’ first varsity eight and first novice eight swept Virginia, while the other four Buckeye boats fell to the Cavaliers.
Next up for the Buckeyes
Ohio State will remain at home, welcoming Tennessee and USC April 8. The regatta begins at 9 a.m. at Griggs Reservoir.
