COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s basketball junior center Jessica Davenport and men’s hockey senior defenseman Nate Guenin have been honored by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) with its All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year award. In all, 242 student-athletes from 160 schools were selected.
Davenport is the two-time reigning Big Ten player of the year and league scoring champion. She also has been named to back-to-back Associated Press All-American teams and will play for Team USA in Australia next month. In addition to her Big Ten scoring title this season, Davenport also led the league in shooting percentage, rebounds per game and blocked shots. The product of Columbus Independence High School is Ohio State’s career leader in field goal percentage and blocks.
“Jessica has won player of the year and All-American each of her college years,” Anthony Glass, Ohio State strength and conditioning coach, said. “She continues to improve each year. Strength training has greatly improved her confidence on and off the court.”
Aliquippa, Pa., native Guenin, Ohio State’s captain for 2005-06, played in 151 games in his Buckeye career, recording 47 assists and 53 points. He was a 2005 Second Team All-Central Collegiate Hockey Association selection and earned honorable mention all-conference accolades in both 2004 and 2006. In the 2005-06 campaign, Guenin played in all 39 Buckeye games, posting 11 points. He ends his Ohio State career fifth in program history with 400 penalty minutes.
“Nate is the captain of the hockey team,” Glass said. “He is a true leader on and off the ice. Strength training has helped him gain the weight and strength necessary to perform at the next level.”
