Synchronized Swimming Fares Well in Semifinals of U.S. Collegiate Nationals – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team (21-0) competed in the solo, duet and trio semifinals Thursday on the first day of competition at the 2006 Collegiate National Championships. The event, which runs through Saturday, is being held at the Avery Aquatic Center in Stanford, Calif.
Ohio State sophomore Becky Kim (Walnut Creek, Calif./Walnut Creek Aquanuts) finished second behind Stanford’s Sara Lowe in the solo event. Kim, Ohio State’s only representative in the event, recorded a score of 92.000 and will move on to participate Saturday in the finals, as the Top
12 finishers in each routine advance. Carly Grimshaw (Sr., Markham, Ontario/Synchro Optima) and Chelsea Luker (Sr., Montreal, Quebec/Montreal Synchro) teamed up to place second in the duet event with a score of 92.333. Lowe and Courtenay Stewart of Stanford led the event with a score of 94.333.
The group of Ellen Hacker (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Newark), Kim and Carmen Moraes (Fr. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Tenis Club) paced the trio competition, placing first with a mark of 92.500. Teammates Grimshaw, Luker and Ashley Rule (Jr. San Jose, Calif./Santa Clara Aquamaids) finished third, scoring a 91.500, while Stanford’s trio squad was second (91.833).
All four technical competition categories (`A’ through `D’ figures) are Friday, beginning with `D’ figures at 7:35 a.m. PST. The team semifinal also is scheduled for Friday at 3:20 PST.
