COLUMBUS, Ohio-The Ohio State men’s basketball team will be a No. 2 seed in the 2006 NCAA Tournament when it takes on No. 15 Davidson Friday in Dayton, Ohio. Game times have not been announced.
Davidson enters the tournament with a 20-10 record. The Wildcats are 3-2 all-time vs. the Buckeyes, who are 8-4 all-time vs. current members of the Southern Conference.
No. 7 Georgetown (21-9) takes on No. 10 Northern Iowa (23-9) Friday with the winner taking on either Ohio State or Davidson in the second round Sunday March 19.
Ohio State was the No. 1 seed in its last two appearances in 1991 and 1992. The Buckeyes have been a Top 4-seed five times.
Ohio State has opened NCAA tournament play in the state of Ohio the last two times, winning two games in Dayton during the 1991 event (vs. Towson State and Georgia Tech in Rds. 1 & 2) and then a pair of early round games in 1992 in Cincinnati vs. Mississippi Valley State and Connecticut.
The Buckeyes have been to the NCAA tournament 19 times and have played a total of 48 games. Ohio State’s NCAA tournament record is 31-17, which includes a 4-0 record during the school’s national title campaign in 1960.
The Buckeyes (25-5) return to NCAA tournament play for the first time since 1992. Four appearances from 1999-2002 were vacated March 10 by the NCAA.
