Marscilla Packer shared Big Ten Player of the Week honors afternetting a career-high 32 points in the Buckeyes’ 76-55 win atMinnesota last Thursday. She tied an Ohio State record with eight3-point field goals in the win. Packer finished the game 12-for-15overall from the floor, including an 8-of-10 mark from beyond the3-point arc. In addition, Packer handed out four assists againstjust one turnover. In her last four games at Michigan, vs. Iowa, atMinnesota and vs. Michigan State, Packer has made 17 of her 283-point attempts. She is the Big Ten’s leading 3-point shooter at48.5 percent. Junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer was selectedWestern Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week,announced by the conference Monday. It is the third honor forVanderveer this season and seventh weekly award for a Buckeye thisyear. She was also selected Defensive Player of the Week Oct. 10and Nov. 7. Vanderveer backstopped the Buckeyes to a sweep of NorthDakota Feb. 18-19, saving 69 of 72 shots faced in the series. TheBuckeyes won 4-3 in overtime Saturday and 2-0 Sunday. She saved all34 shots Sunday for her third shutout this season and sixth of hercareer. All three of her shutouts this year have been on the road(at Northeastern, Oct. 14; at Minnesota State, Jan. 6). Vanderveerhad 35 saves Saturday and 34 saves Sunday to total seven times thisseason she has made 30 or more saves in a game. She also picked upher first point of the season when she was awarded the secondassist on the first goal Sunday. She has had a solid second half ofthe season. In 10 starts, she has made 274 saves with 19goals-allowed for a 1.84 GAA and .935 save percentage.

The baseball team begins the 2006 this weekend at the PepsiBaseball Classic in Gainesville, Fla. The Buckeyes will take onWake Forest in the season opener Friday at 2 p.m. Following thatgame, Ohio State will meet No. 1 Florida at 2 p.m. Saturday in agame that will be televised by Sun Sports (cable and satellite).No. 12 Missouri awaits Sunday at 10 a.m. The Buckeyes are comingoff a 40-20 season and their third Big Ten tournament championshipin the last four years. After winning the tournament for theseventh time overall, Ohio State qualified for the NCAA tournamentfor the 11th time under Bob Todd, who is entering his 19th seasonin Columbus. The Buckeyes return 18 letterwinners from the 2005squad. The Buckeyes return three of four infielders – junior secondbaseman Jason Zoeller, senior short stop Jedidiah Stephen andjunior third baseman Ronnie Bourquin – as well as sophomore catcherEric Fryer, sophomore outfielder Matt Angle and starting pitchers,junior left-hander Dan DeLucia and sophomore left-hander CoryLuebke. The Buckeyes, who are celebrating their 10th season at BillDavis Stadium in 2006, do not open at home until March 29. Themen’s basketball team takes on Michigan State at 8 p.m. Wednesday(ESPN Plus/WBNS 10 TV) in East Lansing, Mich. The Buckeyes, 19-4overall, are looking to reach the 20-win plateau for the 21st timein school history and for the second-consecutive season under headcoach Thad Matta. Matta is one of just two coaches nationally (MarkFew, Gonzaga) to record 20 or more wins every year as a head coach.Matta is a win away from his sixth 20-win season. He had one atButler, three at Xavier and one so far as the leader of theBuckeyes. Ohio State plays at home Saturday against Michigan. Thatgame will be televised nationally by CBS with a 1:30 p.m. tip. TheBuckeyes are 14-1 at Value City Arena this season. Clark Kelloggand Gus Johnson will be calling the action. At the 2006 Big TenWomen’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio, theOhio State women’s team finished seventh with 258 points. The teambroke six school records, including two by Gulsah Gunenc. Gunencfinished second in the 200-yard butterfly. The 200-, 400- and800-yard freestyle relay teams recorded NCAA “B” qualifying timesand a total of 19 individual NCAA “B” times were recorded amongfour Buckeyes in the championships. Griet Buelens and Gunenc eachrecorded six NCAA “B” times. Nicole Maglich notched five, whileElaine Chan claimed two NCAA “B” cut times during thechampionships. NCAA “B” times put the individual or relay team intoconsideration to compete at the 2006 NCAA Women’s Swimming andDiving Championships in Athens, Ga. Ohio State recorded six schoolrecords and 43 lifetime-best times throughout the four-day event.The women’s golf team finished second of 14 teams at the CentralDistrict Challenge in Parrish, Fla. The Buckeyes totaled 907 at thepar 72 River Wilderness Golf Club. Stephanie Connelly and Dana Jetied for 11th in the individual standings with 226. Connellyrecorded the shot of the tournament for the Buckeyes with an eagleon the 480-yard par five No. 4 hole, Monday. The No. 12 men’stennis team defeated Butler and Wright State 7-0 in a double headerFriday at the Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. With the pair ofvictories the Buckeyes improve to 9-0, their best start sinceopening 15-0 in 1988. Senior Ross Wilson (Toledo, Ohio/Toledo St.Francis de Sales) collected his 100th career doubles win. Wilson isthe all time leader in doubles wins, followed closely by hispartner Scott Green (Sr. North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) with 99. Wilsonearned his 76th career singles win with a victory over Evan West ofButler 6-4, 6-1 Friday. With the victory, Wilson moved into a tiewith Lior Rusinek for the No. 15 spot all-time. The Buckeyes nexttravel to No. 31 Notre Dame Friday and No. 20 Virginia CommonwealthSunday. The women’s basketball team (23-2, 13-1 Big Ten) defeated apair of ranked opponents in the last week, winning 76-55 at No.17/16 Minnesota last Thursday and topping No. 14/14 Michigan State,69-38, at home Monday. Marscilla Packer led the Buckeyes past theGolden Gophers with a career-high 32 points. She nailed 12-of-15field goal attempts and tied an Ohio State record with an 8-for-10clip from 3-point territory. Monday, the Buckeyes held MichiganState to its lowest point total in five seasons and JessicaDavenport scored 22 points to extend Ohio State’s win streak to 14games.
The Buckeyes close out the regular season this week as they host No. 12/11 Purdue at 8 p.m. Thursday with a chance to clinch the regular season Big Ten crown on the line. Ohio State travels to Penn State Sunday for the regular season finale.
Women’s lacrosse opens the season Friday, playing at Stanford.The Buckeyes complete the two-game road trip with a Sunday contestat California. OSU’s Kelly Kremer was named to the 2006 AmericanLacrosse Conference Preseason Team. The rifle team will travel toWest Lafayette, Ind. Saturday to compete in the WesternIntercollegiate Rifle Conference Championships. Men’s Volleyballsplit road matches last week, losing at Loyola, 0-3, and defeatingClarke, 3-0. The Buckeyes return home this Friday to host IPFW at 7p.m. OSU then travels to Ball State Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Thewrestling team will begin postseason action when it travels to the2006 Big Ten Conference Wrestling Championships in Assembly Hall inBloomington, Ind.
J Jaggers posted his 25th win of the regular season at 149 pounds when he defeated Penn State’s Jason Lapham, 11-0, Feb. 17. Jaggers’ 25 wins is a team best, as well as his 15-3 dual record. Steve Sommer also won at 157 pounds, upsetting No. 13 Nathan Galloway, 6-1.
The men’s lacrosse team travels to Annapolis, Md., to take onNo. 6 Navy at 7 p.m. The Buckeyes opened the year with a 14-5 lossto No. 14 North Carolina in Baltimore. Kevin Buchanan led theBuckeyes in that game with two goals. The No. 2-ranked men’sgymnastics team faces off against Penn State in a co-ed meet at 7p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes lost to No. 1Oklahoma and downed No.7 California in a home meet last weekend.Junior Willie Ito was named the Big Ten Co-Gymnast of the Weekafter placing in the top three in three events in the tri-meet. Itotied for first place on the high bar with a score of 9.600. He alsoearned third-place finishes on the pommel horse (8.950) andparallel bars (9.200). Ito holds the top spot in the GymInfo’snational rankings with an average score of 9.633 on the high bar.The Huntington Beach, Calif., native earns his second careeraccolade as he was also honored on Feb. 1, 2006. The women’s tennisteam, coming off a 4-3 road loss at Virginia Tech, host two matchesthis weekend. The team will face Louisville at 11 a.m. Saturday andTennessee at 11 a.m. Sunday in Jesse Owens West Recreation Center.The men’s hockey team ends regular-season play with a two-gameseries at Northern Michigan this weekend. The teams will meet at7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Berry Events Center inMarquette, Mich. Last weekend the Buckeyes were 1-0-1 vs. FerrisState, tying, 3-3, and coming back to win, 3-2. The synchronizedswimming team finished first at the Walsh Invitational at theNorthwest Community Center in Canton, Ohio. Feb. 18 to improve itsrecord to 14-0. The Buckeyes recorded 86 points to outdistancesecond-place finisher Canisius, which posted 72 points. Keuka andWalsh were third and fourth with 67 and 54 points, respectively.
In the trio event, the group of Michelle Benzie, Julia Broadfoot and Jayme DeLancy executed a first-place performance with a score of 90.333. Leayn and Leah Pinette won the duet competition, scoring an 89.666. DeLancy was the Buckeyes’ lone soloist and she finished second with a mark of 87.166. In the team event, the OSU `B’ team recorded a 93.334 to finish first. Up next for the Buckeyes is the North Regional championships. The meet, which is the Buckeyes’ Scarlet and Gray day, is March 4 at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The softball team topped host Stetson in the finale of theStetson Tournament Sunday to improve to 5-4 on the season and givehead coach Linda Kalafatis her 300th win at Ohio State. Thisweekend the Buckeyes travel to the Palm Springs Classic where No. 2UCLA and No. 3 Arizona are among their five opponents. Senior StacyHibma leads the Buckeyes with a .462 average, while junior MeganSchwab is batting .400 with three homers and 10 RBI. The fencingteam travels to the Midwest Conference Championships this weekendwhere the Buckeyes seek their third-consecutive conference title.The OSU men are 22-0, while the women are 19-3. The women’sgymnastics team scored a season-best 194.725 in a one-point loss atNo. 16 Denver Saturday, which ended a four-meet road stretch. TheBuckeyes, ranked No. 6 in the region and No. 26 nationally, arehome for their next two meets, the first of which is at 7 p.m.Saturday against Penn State in a co-ed meet in St. John Arena.Sophomore Maalika More-Thomas is ranked No. 5 in the Central Regionin the all-around. The men’s and women’s track and field teamscompeted in the final meet of the 2006 indoor season Saturday atthe Scarlet and Gray Invitational in French Field House. Ohio Stateswept the Top 3 spots in several events, starting with the women’s55-meter dash. Freshman Ayrizanna Favours won the event in aseason-best time of 6.92. She finished ahead of teammates JennaHarris (6.99) and Bever-Leigh Holloway (7.23). Later, Hollowayfollowed with a win in the 55m hurdle event, timing 8.22. Favoursalso posted the best time in the 200m dash, winning in acareer-best 24.2. Keturah Lofton, a senior thrower, closed out herindoor home career a mark of 67 feet, 3 ½ inches to winthe women’s weight throw. Lofton’s measure counts as a provisionalqualifier to the 2006 NCAA Indoor National Championships March10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark. Also in the women’s throws, freshmanJanine Zylinski won the women’s shot put with a heave of 49-4 1/4,finishing ahead of fellow OSU freshman Veronica Jatsek and herthrow of 47-11. In the men’s throws, Lenny Jatsek helped Ohio Stateto another sweep by winning the weight on a heave of 66-9 3/4.David Ebersole (61-1 1/4 ) and Zach Carr (56-10 3/4 ) took secondand third, respectively. In the men’s sprints, the Ohio State duoof Todd Dutch and Tony Cole claimed second and third in the 55mdash as Dutch set a season-best time of 6.35. Cole posted a 6.46.Cole also grabbed first in the 200m in 22.53. The women’s hockeyteam swept a road series at North Dakota Feb. 18-19, winning 4-3 inovertime Saturday and 2-0 Sunday. The sweep gave the Buckeyes a3-0-1 record against the Sioux this season and snapped a four-gamewinless streak. It was the first sweep for OSU since Jan. 6-7 atMinnesota State. Junior goaltender Erika Vanderveer stopped all 34shots faced Sunday for her third shutout this season and sixth ofher career. Several Buckeyes tallied multiple points in the series,led by senior co-captain Jana Harrigan’s three-point game Saturday.She had a goal and two assists. Junior co-captain Amber Bowman andfreshman Hayley Klassen each had a goal and as assist Saturday andan assist Sunday. Sophomore Erin Keys had a helper in game one andscored the first goal Sunday. Bowman scored the game-winning 4-on-4goal Saturday with just 42 seconds remaining in overtime.
The Buckeyes conclude their 2005-06 regular season schedule when they welcome the Wisconsin Badgers to OSU Ice Rink Feb. 24-25. Games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and 4:07 p.m. Saturday. Prior to the Saturday game, the women’s hockey program will honor its three seniors -Harrigan, Crystal Sayther and Katie Sershen.
