COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team returns to the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Saturday to host the OSU College Association Meet at 4 p.m.
The Buckeyes (5-0) will welcome Miami, Michigan, Ohio, Walsh and William & Mary to their second of three home meets this season. The order of events is trio, duet and solo.
400-CLUB
Buckeye head coach Linda Lichter-Witter is two wins shy of collecting her 400th career victory.
Witter entered her 11th season as the OSU coach with a 393-7 record, which also stands as her career ledger. So far in 2006 she has compiled five wins in two meets.
IT’S JUST THE BEGINNING
Ohio State improved its marks in four out of five routines in its second meet of the season at the Ohio Invitational Jan. 29. In the solo, Becky Kim scored a 95.667 to better her score of a 90.500 from the OSU Tri-Meet. Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker scored a 92.667 in Athens, Ohio, compared to an 89.000 from two weeks ago. Also in the duet, Ellen Hacker and Carmen Moraes boosted their score to a 90.667 from an 86.500. The trio group of Hacker, Kim and Moraes upped their marks to a 94.333 after earning a score of 91.667 at the tri-meet.
MIXING IT UP
The Buckeyes introduced a slightly different group to compete in the trio routine at the Ohio Invitational. Sophomore Michelle Benzie teamed up with Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker to score a 90.000 to finish second behind teammates Ellen Hacker, Becky Kim and Carmen Moraes, who earned a 94.333.
A week before (Jan. 21) at the OSU-Tri Meet, Grimshaw, Luker and Ashley Rule synchronized to place second after notching a 90.167.
LAST TIME OUT – OHIO INVITATIONAL
Ohio State scored 93 points to finish first at the Ohio Invitational Jan. 29 at the OU Aquatic Center in Athens, Ohio. The Buckeyes swept all three routines for the second-consecutive meet to beat the Ohio `A’ team (78.750), Ohio `B’ team (70.333) and Miami (67.667).
Becky Kim recorded the highest mark of the meet, scoring a 95.667 in the solo to earn a first-place standing and Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker won duet, compiling a 92.667. Ellen Hacker and Carmen Moraes finished second, scoring a 90.667.
A pair of Buckeye trio routines finished first and second, with the group of Hacker, Kim and Moraes scoring a 94.333 to win. Michelle Benzie, Grimshaw and Luker were second, recording a 90.000.
FAMILIAR FOES
This will be the second time this season Ohio State will face Miami, Michigan and Ohio in the pool. The Buckeyes met the RedHawks and Bobcats at the Ohio Invitational Jan. 29 and faced the Wolverines at the OSU-Tri-Meet Jan. 21. OSU won both competitions to go 5-0 on the year.
Walsh and William & Mary also make an appearance on Ohio State’s 2006 schedule. The Buckeyes meet the Cavaliers Feb. 12 and compete in the Walsh Invitational Feb. 18.
OSU COLLEGE ASSOCIATION – 2005
Ohio State broke the 100-point mark, scoring 104 points to beat Michigan (70.4), William & Mary (67.0), Ohio (63.5) and Miami (38.0) at the 2005 OSU College Association Meet at the Varsity Pool in Larkins Hall.
Buckeyes Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker won duet with a mark of 93.667 and Grimshaw and Luker teamed up with former Buckeye Lauren Marsh to win trio, scoring a 91.833.
Luker also won technical elements with a score of 8.926 and Brooke Paul earned first-place in `B’ Figures with a mark of 76.250.
OH SO CLOSE
Ohio State’s team score of 96 at the OSU Tri-Meet was just 1.8 points shy of its season best from one year ago. In 2005, the Buckeyes tallied a season high 97.800 at the North Regional championships March 5 in the Varsity Pool at Larkins Hall.
NATIONALLY KNOWN
Ohio State junior Becky Kim was named to the 2006 U.S. Senior National Team I Synchronized Swimming squad, U.S. Synchronized Swimming announced Nov. 21. Kim was named to the 12-member group after competing in the Senior National team trials Nov. 18-20 in Portland, Ore.
Serving as a member of the 2005 Team I squad, Kim is one of seven swimmers returning to the 2006 team, including former Buckeye Kate Hooven (2004). Team I will represent the United States at the FINA World Cup Sept. 14-17, 2006, in Yokohama, Japan.
Twin sisters Leah and Leayn Pinette qualified to compete for a chance to remain on the Team II squad at the competition, following a stint on the 2005 team. The Team II members will be announced at the U.S. National Championships April 23-24, 2006, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and will represent the United States at the U.S. Open July 16-22 in Orlando, Fla.
FROM ALL OVER
The Buckeyes boast three swimmers who hail from Canada and Brazil. Seniors Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker are natives of Markham, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec, respectively.
Buckeye newcomer Carmen Moraes is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In addition to recruiting outside the United States, OSU has student-athletes from Arizona (1), California (5), Connecticut (3), Florida (1), as well as Ohio (7).
UP NEXT
Ohio State will prepare for three consecutive road trips, beginning with a trip to Richmond, Va., where it will face Richmond Feb. 11 at Robins Center Pool and William & Mary Feb. 12 at Adair Pool in Williamsburg, Va.
The Buckeyes then will compete at the Walsh Invitational Feb. 18 at the Northwest Community Center in Canton, Ohio.
