COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized swimming team (11-0) will break from dual meet action to compete at the Walsh Invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Northwest Community Center in Canton, Ohio.
OSU will compete against Canisius, Keuka and Walsh.
The Buckeyes are coming off a 2-0 weekend in which they defeated Richmond, 93-62, and William & Mary, 105-85.
THE CENTURY MARK
The Buckeyes cracked the century mark for the first time this season vs. William & Mary, scoring 105 points. The last time Ohio state surpassed 100 points was last season at the North Regional championships at the Varsity Pool in Larkins Hall. The Buckeyes won the event with 104 points.
400-CLUB
Buckeye head coach Linda Lichter-Witter collected her 400th win at the OSU College Association Meet Feb. 4.
After guiding OSU to a first-place finish out of five teams, Witter improved her Ohio State and career record to 402-7.
After going 2-0 Feb. 11-12 vs. Richmond and William & Mary, Witter now owns a 404-7 ledger. Witter entered her 11th season as the OSU coach with a 393-7 record.
DYNAMIC DUOS
The duo of Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker won their fifth-consecutive duet routine vs. William & Mary with a team high of 95.833. Their previous best was 94.500, scored twice this season at the OSU College Association Meet and vs. Richmond. THREE’S COMPANY
Ellen Hacker, Becky Kim and Carmen Moraes won their fourth trio event of the season against William & Mary and recorded a team-best 94.833.
BUCKEYE DEBUTS
Leayn and Leah Pinette teamed up for the duet competition vs. William & Mary for the first time this season and recorded a third-place 90.000. Brooke Paul and Megan Mikulecky also made their debut in duet vs. William & Mary and posted an 89.167 for fourth place.
JUST A LITTLE PREVIEW
Freshman Jayme DeLancy and sophomores Michelle Benzie and Julia Broadfoot recorded a personal-best 91.167 vs. William & Mary Feb. 12. It was the second trio routine for the group this season and they finished third behind OSU first-place finishers, Ellen Hacker, Becky Kim and Carmen Moraes (94.833). Carly Grimshaw, Chelsea Luker and Ashley Rule were second (93.167).
UP AND UP
Freshman Carmen Moraes recorded a personal-best 91.500 in the solo routine at the OSU College Association Meet Feb. 4. Moraes bettered her mark of 86.667 compiled at the OSU Tri-Meet Jan. 21.
LAST TIME OUT – RICHMOND
Ohio State downed Richmond, 93-62, Feb. 11 at Robins Center Pool in Richmond, Va.
The Buckeyes were led by junior Becky Kim, who finished first in solo with a score of 94.500 and teamed up with Ellen Hacker and Carmen Moraes to win the trio event with a mark of 91.833. In duet, Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker executed a winning routine, scoring a 94.500.
The OSU `A’ and `B’ teams finished first and second, scoring season highs of 95.833 and 94.333, respectively.
LAST TIME OUT- WILLIAM & MARY
Ohio State topped William & Mary, 105-85, Feb. 12 at Adair Pool in Williamsburg, Va.
Becky Kim was the lone soloist vs. William & Mary and posted a 95.333. In the duet competition, Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker continued its streak of five consecutive dual victories, winning with a season and team-best 95.833. In the trio competition, Ellen Hacker, Becky Kim and Carmen Moraes won with a season and team-high 94.833,
HAVE WE MET BEFORE?
The Buckeyes will face Keuka and Walsh for the second time this season at the Walsh Invitational. Ohio State competed against Keuka at the OSU Tri-Meet Jan. 21 and finished first out of three teams with 96 points, while Keuka placed third with 61.
OSU and Walsh last met at the OSU College Association Meet Feb. 4. The Buckeyes posted a first-place finish with 92 points and Walsh was third with 52 points out of five squads.
PLAN A AND PLAN B
The Ohio State `A’ and `B’ teams scored season bests vs. Richmond Feb. 11. The `A’ squad recorded a 95.833 to better their previous high of 95.167 scored at the OSU College Association Meet Feb. 4. The `B’ team notched a 94.333 to top its 92.167, also scored at the OSU College Association Meet.
WALSH INVITATIONAL – 2005
Ohio State captured first-place honors Jan. 29 at the Walsh Invitational in Canton, Ohio. The Buckeyes finished with 92 points, ahead of second-place Canisius (72) and third-place Walsh (43).
Leslie Edgerton won the solo event with a mark of 86.666. Then-freshmen duet groups, Michelle Benzie and Julia Broadfoot and twin sisters Leah and Leayn Pinette, tied for first place with scores of 87.666. The team of Erin Schmidt, former Buckeye Stacey Coffman and Benzie placed first in trio with a mark of 86.666.
The Buckeye `A’ team also took home first place in the team event with a score of 88.84.
NATIONALLY KNOWN
Ohio State junior Becky Kim was named to the 2006 U.S. Senior National Team I Synchronized Swimming squad, U.S. Synchronized Swimming announced Nov. 21. Kim was named to the 12-member group after competing in the Senior National team trials Nov. 18-20 in Portland, Ore.
Serving as a member of the 2005 Team I squad, Kim is one of seven swimmers returning to the 2006 team, including former Buckeye Kate Hooven (2004). Team I will represent the United States at the FINA World Cup Sept. 14-17, 2006, in Yokohama, Japan.
Twin sisters Leah and Leayn Pinette qualified to compete for a chance to remain on the Team II squad at the competition, following a stint on the 2005 team. The Team II members will be announced at the U.S. National Championships April 23-24, 2006, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and will represent the United States at the U.S. Open July 16-22 in Orlando, Fla.
FROM ALL OVER
The Buckeyes boast three swimmers who hail from Canada and Brazil. Seniors Carly Grimshaw and Chelsea Luker are natives of Markham, Ontario, and Montreal, Quebec, respectively.
Buckeye newcomer Carmen Moraes is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In addition to recruiting outside the United States, OSU has student-athletes from Arizona (1), California (5), Connecticut (3), Florida (1), as well as Ohio (7).
UP NEXT
The Buckeyes return to the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio, March 4 to host the North Regional Championships.
