Athletes of the Week
Anna Szerszen had a match-high 18 points in women’s volleyballwin over Michigan State. She posted a career-high 29.5 points inthe come-from-behind win over Michigan, recording career-highs of27 kills, 11 digs, two solo blocks and tying her career-high ofthree total blocks (2-1). Down 2-1 in the match to Michigan,Szerszen had a game-high nine kills in game four while hitting.421. She then had a game-high four kills, hitting .600 in thedeciding fifth game. Sophomore midfielder Linda Haussener earnedher first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week after she scoredthree goals last weekend, including the game-winning overtime goalagainst No. 18 Michigan, as the field hockey team went 2-0 on theroad. Haussener, a native of Baden, Switzerland, scored the openinggoal against both VCU Friday and Michigan Sunday. In overtime vs.the Wolverines, she scored her second game-winning goal of theseason 1:51 into the extra session for the Buckeyes’ third OT winin the last five games. The three goals increased her goal streakto three games and her point streak to five games. This season,Haussener has more than doubled her career point total rankingsecond on the team with 31 points. She had 13 during her freshmancampaign.
Athletics Good Stuff
Women’s volleyball defeated Michigan State, 3-0 and Michigan,3-2, in home matches last week. Anna Szerszen had 18 points, BrianaMcCarthy 17.5, Danielle Meyer 14.5 and Felicia Jones 11 against theSpartans. Ami Stevens added 23 digs in the contest.
Against Michigan, Szerszen had a career-high 29.5 points with Meyer adding 18, McCarthy 17.5 and Jones 12 as the Buckeyes rallied to win the match after trailing 2-1. Marisa Main contributed match-highs of 18 digs and 63 assists. Ohio State, 15-5 overall, and 5-5 in the Big Ten, now play at Minnesota (15-5, 9-1) Friday and at Wisconsin (15-5, 7-3) Sunday.
The fifth-ranked field hockey team posted two road wins lastweekend in Ann Arbor, Mich., to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-1 inthe Big Ten. The Buckeyes blanked Virginia Commonwealth, 4-0,Friday in a neutral-site game for back-to-back shutouts. Fourdifferent Buckeyes scored against the Rams: Linda Haussener, SaskiaMueller, Curlyne Wynn and Emily Mikac. Wynn and Mueller alsotallied assists in the game. It was the fifth shutout of anopponent this season, all with freshman keeper Lindsay Quintilianiin cage. On Sunday, Ohio State defeated No. 18 Michigan by a scoreof 3-2 in overtime on two goals by Haussener, including thegamewinner 1:51 into the extra session. Senior Lauren Kruse talliedthe other Buckeye goal.
For her performance on the weekend, Haussener, a sophomore midfielder from Baden, Switzerland, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week. It was the first weekly honor of her career, but the third-consecutive week a Buckeye has received the award. Overall this season, Ohio State has earned the league’s player of the week award eight times.
The Buckeyes host Michigan State Saturday at noon at North Turf Field in their final regular-season game. Ohio State currently leads the Big Ten standings and with a win, would have at least a share of the conference title. The team will then compete in the 2006 Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 3-5.
The men’s soccer team traveled north twice last week, beatingOakland 3-2 in overtime Wednesday before tying Michigan 0-0 indouble-overtime Sunday. The Buckeyes (8-6-3, 2-2-1 Big Ten) hostMichigan State at 2 p.m. Sunday to wrap up the regular-seasonbefore hosting the Big Ten Championship Nov. 2-5.
In the win at Oakland, Ohio State overcame a 2-0 deficit with three consecutive goals to pull out the win, while Sunday junior goalkeeper Casey Latchem notched his eighth save of the season, moving past OSU assistant coach Jon Lowery for third place on the single-season list.
Three members of the men’s tennis team advanced to thesemifinal round of the 2006 ITA Midwest Regional Monday held on thecampus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Play willcontinue Tuesday at the Baseline Tennis Center. Devin Mullings, theNo. 8 seed in the tournament, beat Mark Spicijaric of Illinois 3-6,6-1, 7-6. Mullings will face Sheeva Parbhu of Notre Dame in thefinal four. Senior Chris Klingemann, the No. 11 seed, defeated NickRinks of Michigan State 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 to book his place in thesemifinals. Both OSU players are 8-1 on the season. SophomoreSteven Moneke, the tournament’s No. 11 seed, downed Steven Bass ofNotre Dame to 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals. Moneke is9-2 this season and will play OSU teammate Klingemann in the nextround. The women’s hockey team dropped a second pair of games, thistime on the road at St. Cloud State Oct. 20-21. The Buckeyes fellby a score of 5-4 Friday and 3-2 (OT) Saturday. OSU has not won atSt. Cloud since a series sweep Nov. 14-15, 2003. On Friday, OhioState scored two goals late in the game but the rally fell short asthe team lost 5-4. Amber Bowman and Lisa Chesson each scored in theclosing four minutes of regulation, but SCSU held on to its leadfor the win. Trailing 2-1 after two periods Saturday, OSU evenedthe score in the third period on a goal by Hayley Klassen to sendthe game into overtime. Denelle Maguet scored 3:29 into overtime tocomplete the Husky sweep. Bowman’s three-point weekend increasedher career total to 75 and her two assists pushed her over the 50assists mark.
Ohio State next plays in back-to-back home series, beginning with No. 6 Minnesota Oct. 27-28. Both games begin at 7:07 p.m. Friday and Saturday at OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes then welcome Connecticut of Hockey East for a nonconference series Nov. 3-4.
John Ealy, a junior from Reynoldsburg, Ohio, leads the men’sand women’s cross country teams into the 2006 Big Ten ChampionshipsSunday in Bloomington, Ind. The 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year,Ealy and the Buckeye men’s team look to improve on a second-placeteam finish in 2005. The men’s hockey team lost a pair of games athome to Minnesota last weekend, falling 7-2 and 6-3. Junior MattMcIlvane led the Buckeyes with three points in the game Saturday,while classmate Jason DeSantis had a team-best three assists in theseries. The team returns to Central Collegiate Hockey Associationaction with a two-game series at Northern Michigan this weekend.The teams will meet at 7:35 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Marquette,Mich. The women’s tennis team traveled to East Lansing, Mich., forthe ITA Midwest Regionals last week. Sophomore Angela DiPastina wonthree matches in the qualifying round to advance to the main draw,where she joined five Buckeye teammates. Three Buckeyes, freshmenAlly Mueller and Christina Keesey and sophomore Julie Blackmore,won their first-round singles matches before losing in the Round of32. In doubles, the Buckeyes were led by the duos of KristinMessmer and Ciara Finucane and Julie Blackmore and SoniaRuzimovsky, who both reached the Round of 16 in the 64-team draw.The Buckeyes return to action at the Dartmouth Big GreenInvitational this weekend in Hanover, N.H. The rifle team dropped a4,547-4,444 at West Virginia Saturday. The Buckeyes were outscoredin smallbore, 2,251 to 2,197 and in air rifle, 2,296 to 2,247.OSU’s Steven Nozaki was the Buckeyes’ top score in both events. Hehad a 562 in smallbore and a 575 in air rifle. West Virginia’sBrian Launer had the high score in both events, recording a 568 insmallbore and a 586 in air rifle. Ohio State will host Rose-Hulman,Sunday, Oct. 29. The men’s golf team travels to Wilmington, N.C.,to participate in its final fall tournament of 2006 at the LandfallTraditional, Oct. 27-29. The tournament will be played at the par72, 6,982 yard Country Golf Club of Landfall. The field willconsist of Big Ten foes Indiana and Purdue along with Kansas,Maryland, Memphis, Missouri, UNCW, Ohio State, Tulsa, VCU, VirginiaTech and Xavier. The women’s golf team will resume play thisweekend after a two week hiatus. The Buckeyes head to Wilmington,North Carolina, ranked No. 24 in the Golfweek poll, to compete inthe 3-day, 54-hole Landfall Tradition tournament. Competition atthe Landfall Tradition will round out the fall season for theBuckeyes. Senior left-handed pitcher Dan DeLucia, senior outfielderJacob Howell, junior outfielder Matt Angle and junior catcher EricFryer have been named captains of the 2007 baseball team head coachBob Todd announced Oct. 18. The quartet was selected by a team voteat a team meeting at the conclusion of fall practice last Tuesday.DeLucia and Howell also were captains in 2006. All four playerswere recognized with All-Big Ten honors last season.
DeLucia and Angle were first-team selections, while Fryer was a second-team selection and Howell a third-team honoree. All four players also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2006. The Buckeyes also had four captains in 1991, 2003 and 2004. In addition, Ryan Dew and Brian DeLucia were named as rookie captains.
Jessica Davenport, a senior center on the women’s basketballteam, was honored at the conclusion of the third quarter Saturdayduring the Buckeye football game vs. Indiana in Ohio Stadium. Thenative of Columbus, Ohio, received her 2006 Ohio State Athlete ofthe Year award after leading the Buckeyes to theirsecond-consecutive Big Ten title.
