COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team lost to Michigan, 2-1, in overtime Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Senior Taylor Smith scored for the Buckeyes and Lara Dickenmann was credited with her seventh assist of the season. The Buckeyes are 9-7-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines are 8-5-5 and 4-2-3 in the conference.
Ohio State will conclude the 2006 regular season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 when it hosts Minnesota at JOMS. The Big Ten Tournament, hosted by Penn State University, follows Nov. 2-5 at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.
The Buckeyes, who held a 22-10 shot advantage in the match, got on the board first in the 36th minute when Smith (Sr., Shaker Heights, Ohio/Cobras) headed the ball into the net off of Dickenmann’s (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland/DFC Sursee) corner kick.
A foul by OSU near the end line in the final seconds of the first half gave the Wolverines an indirect free kick, taken by Melissa Dobbyn. Dobbyn found Kristin Thomas in the 6-yard box and Thomas was able to get the ball past OSU keeper Lauren Robertson (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) to even the game at 1-all.
Ohio State took a series of shots in the second half that nearly gave them a 2-1 lead, but the attempts either went just wide or high, including consecutive Dickenmann shots that just cleared the crossbar with 20:14 and 18:03 remaining in the game. With the game even at 1-1, as time expired in regulation, the game went into an extra session. It was in the 96th minute of overtime Dobbyn drove the ball into the top left corner of the net from the top of the 18-yard box to give Michigan the win. Kristin Thomas was on the assist.
“We had two lapses that cost us the game,” Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. “We can’t leave their best shooter unmarked at the top of the box. We are still in a good spot, so we just have to come back and put points on the scoreboard Friday.”
For the match, Ohio State held the corner kicks advantage, 6-2. Robertson made two stops and Michigan keeper Megan Tuura made seven saves.
The Scarlet and Gray now are 8-1-0 on the season when it scores first. The match against the Wolverines is just the second Buckeye loss (5-2-1) at JOMS this season.
