COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite out shooting Penn State, 17-10, the Ohio State women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, to the 11th-ranked Nittany Lions Sunday at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa. The loss drops the Buckeyes to 8-6-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the Big Ten. Penn State improves to 10-3-3 and 6-1-1 in the conference.
Almost identical to the match up last season in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio, the Scarlet and Gray gave up an early goal to the Nittany Lions, but held strong for the remainder of the game.
“This was a typical Ohio State vs. Penn State battle,” Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. “It was good soccer played by two teams. We played extremely well in the midfield. Our three, against their four, did a good job of winning the ball and transitioning to the attack. We hope to be back at Penn State in a couple of weeks and hopefully we will see them again.”
In 2005, Ohio State relinquished a goal in the sixth minute, but held then-No. 1 Penn State scoreless the rest of the way. This time around, Nittany Lion Katie Schoepfer scored on a clean breakaway and beat OSU keeper Lauren Robertson (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) to put the ball in the net in the seventh minute. Ali Krieger was credited with the assist.
OSU recorded nine shots in the first period, including four on goal, but could not finish. Senior tri-captain Melissa Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kolping) headed a couple of Buckeye chances in the 19th and 22nd minutes, as did fellow captain Lisa Grubb (Sr., Portage, Mich./Michigan Hawks) in the 41st minute, but neither was able to even the score to possibly send the match to overtime.
The Buckeye defense limited the Nittany Lions to four shots in the second half, including just one on goal to keep them in the game. Ohio State fired eight shots with three on net.
For the match, Robertson tallied six saves and PSU keeper Alyssa Naeher had seven stops. In corner kicks, Ohio State finished the game with a 4-3 advantage.
The Scarlet and Gray will play the remainder of its Big Ten schedule at JOMS, first hosting Michigan State and Michigan. The Buckeyes face the Spartans at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and the Wolverines at 1 p.m. Oct. 22. OSU wraps up the regular season against Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27.
