COLUMBUS, Ohio – The gamewinning goal by Lisa Grubb lifted the Ohio State women’s soccer team over nonconference opponent Wright State, 3-1, Wednesday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The win improves the Buckeyes to 8-5-1 overall and they remain 3-3-0 in the Big Ten Conference. The Raiders drop to 8-3-3 and 1-2-1 in the Horizon League. The match, which was scheduled for 7:30 p.m., was delayed one hour and five minutes because of inclement weather.
Grubb (Sr., Portage, Mich./Michigan Hawks) ended the 1-all tie in the 42nd minute when she picked up the rebound from Keiana Mitchell’s (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Dayton Soccer Academy) shot and put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season and her 32nd overall. Both Mitchell and Carla Arbulu (Jr., Grover Beach, Calif./So Cal United), who took the corner kick that led to the goal, were credited with the assist.
Grubb then sealed the win for Ohio State at the 73:41 mark when she recorded her second goal of the game. Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week (Oct. 9) Lara Dickenmann (Jr., Kriens, Switzerland/DFC Sursee) and Caitlin Colfer (Albany, N.Y./Albertson) fed Grubb the ball from the midfield and the senior tri-captain was able to beat a Wright State defender from the left side of the box.
“Grubb has been working really hard and has become a much better player,” Lori Walker, head coach, said. “She just had this monkey on her back all season and now it’s great she has scored a couple of goals for us.”
The Buckeyes were down early after the Raiders’ Amy Miller scored on a penalty kick at 5:33. However, Ohio State answered when Mitchell notched her first point of the game and the season after she led Lisa Collison (So., Niagara Falls, Ontario/Burlington Flames) from the midfield to the goal for the score in the 19th minute. Collison’s game-tying goal was her eighth of the season.
Ohio State out shot Wright State, 16-8, and held the corner kicks advantage, 7-1. OSU keeper Lauren Robertson (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif./So Cal Blues) made two stops, while WSU’s Steph Comisar had five saves. The Raiders also were credited with a team save. .
The Buckeyes return to Big Ten Conference action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they travel to University Park, Pa., to take on No. 11 Penn State at Jeffrey Field. The game will be a rematch of a hard-fought, 1-0, loss to the then-No. 1 Nittany Lions last season at JOMS.
