Each team scored once in the first period. Matt Waddell (Jr., Armstrong, British Columbia) got the Buckeyes on the board 8:26 into the game. With the Buckeyes on the penalty kill, Nate Guenin (Sr., Aliquippa, Pa.) passed the puck up to Bryce Anderson (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa). Anderson skated into the zone and took a shot that was saved. Waddell got to the rebound and one-timed the puck, as it went off goalie Jon Horrell’s glove and in. The Falcons tied the score when Alex Foster scored unassisted at 10:57 with Bowling Green on the power play. A Buckeye clearing attempt took a funny bounce off the glass and went in front of the Buckeye net. Goalie Dave Caruso (Sr., Roswell, Ga.) was unable to cover the puck and Foster got there to chip it in. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the period, 15-7. OSU was scoreless on three power-play chances, while BGSU was 1-for-3. In the second period, Sam Campbell (So., Hamilton, Ontario) put the Buckeyes ahead, 2-1, as he put in the rebound of a Mathieu Beaudoin (Jr., Sherbrooke, Quebec) shot for his first goal of the season. Kenny Bernard (Jr., Sarnia, Ontario) had the first assist, as he started the rush and had the initial shot that was blocked. Bowling Green again tied the game when Ryan Barnett scored at 18:15, set up by Foster. OSU had nine shots in the period, BGSU 5. Each team was 0-for-2 on the power play.
The teams were scoreless during the third until Whitmore’s goal with 1:44 left in regulation. After Caruso made a save on John Mazzei all alone in front of the crease, Whitmore got to the puck first and put it in for the winner. OSU pulled Caruso with 58 seconds remaining for the extra attacker, but was unable to score. The Buckeyes outshot the Falcons in the period, 16-9.
For the game, Caruso played 59:02 in net, making 18 saves on 21 shots. Horrell had 38 saves on 40 Buckeye attempts.

Postgame Quotes
John Markell, Ohio State head coach
On Ohio State’s performance
“We put ourselves in a position to win, but the opponent came in playing well, played as a team and out hit us. It makes it hard to win when you generate 40 shots and don’t get the puck in the net. Now we have to go on the road to a tough place to play at Bowling Green.”
On Ohio State’s performance over the season
“This team isn’t showing consistency. It’s a mental game. We had enough opportunities to score in the third period, but Bowling Green is playing better than their record. We need to get points this weekend.”
Nate Guenin, Ohio State senior defenseman
On Ohio State’s performance
“When you sleepwalk through two periods you can’t win a game. It’s like we are back to square one again. If guys aren’t scared after this game I don’t know what will. I give the coaches credit for everything, they shouldn’t have to walk us through things every week because we are men.”
Tom Fritsche, Ohio State sophomore forward
On what Ohio State needs to work on
“A lot of our shots are from the perimeter. It’s an attitude thing each player has to take it upon himself to get in front of the net. We have to find a way to win.”
Scott Paluch, Bowling Green head coach
On the game
“It was a terrific college hockey game and it was a really big win for our team. We have had a little bit of a streak but we needed to carry it over to the conference games. There’s still a lot of CCHA play left and we needed some confidence for those games. It was good to see that we have the ability to earn points in both this building and in the conference.”
On playing against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio
“Not many teams are going to come in here against this team and win a battle in the shots. You just want to come out with a win after 60 minutes. Ohio State is just too good and they have too much depth.”
On preparing for tomorrow’s game
“For us, tomorrow, it’s going to be looking at game management. We’re not going to be able to chase Ohio State down the ice and be successful. We’re going to have to manage the puck and the game to be successful.”
Alex Foster, Bowling Green sophomore forward
On the win over Ohio State
“I’m only a sophomore, but during my year and a half with the team the seniors have been saying that we haven’t beaten them in four years. So, it was great to come out and win this one.”
Jon Horrell, Bowling Green senior goalie
On preparing for the games against Ohio State
“It’s always easy getting ready for the big games. The last two times (against Ohio State) I’ve felt pretty good. I grew up with (Dave) Caruso, so it’s always been a battle between the two of us.”
