Athletes of the Week
Danielle Meyer extended her string of double-figure killmatches to six with 18 kills against Nebraska and a career-high 25against Long Beach State. Meyer hit .227 against the Cornhuskersadding four digs and two assists. Against Long Beach State she hit.417 and recorded six digs, four blocks (two solos, two assists)and an ace serve. She totaled a career-high 29 points against the49ers. Junior quarterback Justin Zwick led the Buckeyes to a 34-14victory over Miami (Ohio) in the football team’s season opener. Hewas 17-of-23 passing, with a 20-yard touchdown pass to juniorSantonio Holmes.
Athletics Good Stuff
At the Delaware Blue Hen Classic over the weekend, the fieldhockey team downed Richmond, a 2004 NCAA tournament participant,3-1, before falling to 2004 NCAA runner-up Duke, 3-1. Against theSpiders, Lucy Clayton, Lauren Kruse and Leticia Fragapane scoredfor OSU. Yesenia Luces tallied against the Blue Devils.
The Buckeyes open a four-game homestand this week when they play host to Albany at 4 p.m. Friday and Maine at 1 p.m. Sunday. Both games will be played at North Turf Field.
After coming off a 1-1 mark over the weekend, the women’ssoccer team will open its home slate with a match against Kentuckyat 6 p.m. Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes tiedCincinnati 2-2 in double overtime Friday at the Nike Dayton FlyerInvitational, rallying from a 0-2 deficit. Freshman Lisa Collisonscored the game-tying goal, her third goal in as many games. On daytwo of the invitational Sunday, the Buckeyes dropped a close 1-0contest to Furman. The 18th-ranked men’s soccer team opened its2005 season Friday night with a 1-0 win over Marquette in JesseOwens Memorial Stadium. Senior Kevin Nugent netted the game-winner,his second-consecutive at JOMS after notching the game-winner thereagainst No. 11 Memphis last November in the NCAA tournament. Withthe win, OSU improves to 6-3 in home openers under ninth-year headcoach John Bluem. Senior goalkeeper Ray Burse Jr. had the shutout,the ninth of his career. The Buckeyes took No. 8 New Mexico toovertime Sunday before the Lobos escaped with a 1-0 win in the OhioState Classic championship game. This weekend, Ohio State travelsto Greenville, S.C., for the Furman Classic to face CoastalCarolina and host Furman. The men’s and women’s cross country teamsopen their seasons Saturday at the Xavier Invitational in WestChester, Ohio. The men’s team is lead by senior, tri-captains BrianOlinger, an All-American in 2004, Dan Glaz and Matt Penza. SarahCass and Chelsea Poling, both seniors, head the women’s squad.12th-ranked women’s volleyball (2-1) faces Cleveland State Tuesdayand then plays at the Bowling Green Invitational this weekend whenthey will face East Carolina Friday and Chicago State and BowlingGreen Saturday. Last week in the Sports Imports Classic, OSU fellto No. 1 Nebraska 0-3 (15-30, 19-30, 17-30). Danielle Meyer had amatch-high 18 kills in the match. The Buckeyes then defeated No. 24Long Beach State 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 32-30) behind a career-high 25kills from Meyer. Amanda Miller added 12 in the contest andBrittany Dahms had a match-high 14 digs. Nine OSU wrestlers areworking out with the Senior World team at the Olympic TrainingCenter in Colorado Springs, Colo. Former Buckeye Tommy Rowlands, anational team member, also will be in attendance helping seniorteam members prepare for the World Championships in Budapest,Hungary.
Nathaniel Augustson, Charlie Clark, Zach Craiglow, Jordin Humphrey, Reece Humphrey, J Jaggers, Blake Maurer, Keegan Mueller and Eric Wanner will be participating in the camp in an effort to increase workout partners for the World National squad.
Dmitri Bilozertchev (bee-low-ZERT-chev) has been hired as anassistant coach for the men’s gymnastics team, head coach MilesAvery announced Wednesday. Bilozertchev, a two-time world champion(1983 and ’87), was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hallof Fame in 2003. His world title at age 16 in 1983 made him theyoungest world champion in history; he also claimed the pommelhorse, rings and high bar crowns at the meet. He won the bronzemedal in the all-around at the 1988 Olympics, as well as gold onpommel horse and rings. Because of the Soviet Boycott of the 1984Olympics, Bilozertchev competed at the Alternate Games in Olomouc,Czech Republic, where he claimed gold medals in the all-around andfour other events. Bilozertchev was the European all-aroundchampion in 1985. Prior to moving to Columbus, Bilozertchev, anative of Moscow, Russia, and his wife, Olga, were the owners andoperators of United Sports Academy in Beaverton, Ore. Seven membersof the 2004-05 women’s gymnastics team received national academichonors from the National Association of Collegiate GymnasticsCoaches this week. In addition, the Buckeyes received team academichonors for carrying a 3.1895 team grade point average. Ohio State’sseven gymnasts were honored for having at least a 3.5 grade pointaverage for the 2004-05 academic year. Emily Sineway (Norcross,Ga.), a senior on the 2005-06 team, was further honored for havinga perfect 4.0 GPA during the time period. In addition to Sineway,OSU honorees included Shelby Warner (Jr., Fenton, Mich.), KathrynKuchel (Fr., Lincolnshire, Ill.), Leah Boccaccio (Jr., Enfield,Conn.), Jessica Rosette (Fr., Green Cove, Fla.), Megan Flood (Fr.,Canonsburg, Pa.) and Shelley Harris (Sr., East Lansing, Mich.).
