Former Buckeye Dressel Finishes Second in World Rowing Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Buckeyes Margot Shumway and Wilma Dressel competed in the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu, Japan, over the weekend. Dressel, competing in the straight four, finished in second place, representing her home country of Germany. Shumway, racing in the women’s quadruple sculls, placed fifth in the championship serving the U.S. national team.
Dressel, a native of Dortmund, Germany, raced in the straight four (4-), along with Kerstin Naumann (Dresden, Germany), Christiane Hölzel (Leipzig, Germany) and Mandy Emmrich (Dresden, Germany), which finished in a time of 7:03.24. Australia took first place with a time of 6:55.56.
Dressel was a letterwinner at Ohio State in 2004 and a member of the first varsity eight that placed fifth at the 2004 NCAA Championships.
Shumway, a native of Westlake, Ohio, competed in the women’s quadruple sculls (W4x), along with Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), Anna Michelson (Bellevue, Wash.) and Kelly Salchow (Cincinnati, Ohio). The U.S. finished with a time of 6:24.02, placing fifth in the 2005 World Championships. Great Britain won the gold medal with a time of 6:09.59.
Shumway was a letterwinner at Ohio State in 2001 and 2002 and a member of the first varsity four that placed fourth at the 2001 NCAA Championships.
In total, 19 crews represented the United States competing in the men’s single sculls, women’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, men’s double sculls, women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s double sculls, lightweight women’s double sculls, men’s quadruple sculls, women’s quadruple sculls, lightweight men’s quadruple sculls, lightweight women’s quadruple sculls, men’s pair, women’s pair, men’s pair with coxswain, men’s four, lightweight men’s four, men’s four with coxswain, men’s eight and women’s eight.
