Baseball left-handed starting pitcher Dan DeLucia is thisweek’s Good Stuff Athlete of the Week after leading the BaseballBuckeyes to their only win at the NCAA Corvallis Regional inCorvallis, Ore. After losing a heartbreaker the night before, theBuckeyes were facing elimination against the No. 2 seed VirginiaCavaliers. The sophomore from Columbus (Bishop Watterson) hurledhis third complete game of the season and limited Virginia to onlyfour hits while striking out two and walking none. The Buckeyes won2-1 and moved on to face St. John’s on Sunday.
Athletics Good Stuff
At spring commencement ceremonies, 94 Ohio Statestudent-athletes will receive degrees. The ceremony will be held at1 p.m. Sunday in Ohio Stadium on the OSU campus. Ohio State led theBig Ten with 155 honorees when the conference announced its annualspring and at-large academic all-conference selections Thursday.The Buckeyes had a conference-record 260 total honorees this year,breaking the record of 250 Ohio State set in 2003-04. OSU had 249selections last year.
In all, the Big Ten recognized 1,952 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during the 2004-05 academic year, the highest total in the last 11 seasons. OSU is second among conference schools with 2,130 selections over the last 11 seasons, behind only Penn State (2,310).
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average of 3.0 or better.
The men’s and women’s track and field teams collectivelytraveled nine competitors to the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and FieldChampionships in Sacramento, Calif. Events begin Wednesday andcontinue through Saturday at Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium.
Senior Bryan Duby is scheduled as the first Buckeye to compete in the men’s hammer throw Wednesday. Distance runner Aaron Fisher is slated to run in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase later in the evening.
A total of four Buckeyes are set to compete Thursday, headed by two individuals in the high jump in sophomore and Big Ten champion Jessie Stringer for the women and freshman Marios Iacovou for the men. A pair of Buckeyes – Shelaine Larson and Tiffany Davis – throw in the hammer as well.
Friday, senior Big Ten champs Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore will strive for their fourth and third All-America honors in the women’s triple jump.
Baseball posted 40 wins for the 10th time in Bob Todd’s 18years as head coach of the Buckeyes, finishing 40-20 after going1-2 in the NCAA Corvallis Regional. The fourth-seeded Buckeyes werestunned in the bottom of the ninth inning against No. 2 andnational No. 8 seed Oregon State when Shea McFeely sent the 4-3game winner over the fence in left-centerfield. Ohio Staterebounded with a gem of a performance from starting pitcher DanDeLucia to eliminate second seeded Virginia 2-1. DeLucia pitched afour-hit, nine-inning complete game in the one-run victory. No. 3seed St. John’s ended Ohio State’s season with a 7-1 loss. OregonState went on to win the regional with a 19-3 victory Sunday nightand moves on to host Southern California in a best-of-three superregional. Designated hitter Wes Schirtzinger was the only Buckeyenamed to the all-regional team. Senior co-captains Steve Caravatiand Mike Rabin led the team in batting. Caravati batted .353 with53 hits, including 13 doubles, four triples and five home runs. Heknocked in 33 runs and scored 33 times. Rabin batted .330 with ateam-high 66 hits, including six doubles and two home runs. Hebatted in 28 runs and scored 46 runs. Jason Zoeller led the teamwith six home runs, while Paul Farinacci led the team with 20doubles and 54 RBI. DeLucia led the team with a 2.92 ERA and 55strikeouts in 95.2 innings. Men’s lacrosse senior midfielder Tom Randisi has been selected tocompete in the 64th annual USILA North/South Classic, co-sponsoredby STX and Geico, the United States Intercollegiate LacrosseAssociation announced. The game will be held Saturday in Cortland,N.Y., on the SUNY Cortland campus. Randisi will compete for theDivision I North squad.
Randisi is the 17th Buckeye named to the team. This marks the sixth consecutive year an Ohio State player has made the squad (Mike Abeles 2000; Sandy Boyce 2001; John DiCamillo 2002; Curtis Smith and Pat Myers, 2003; Greg Bice and Tony Russo, 2004).
Junior doubles pair Scott Green and Ross Wilson, members of themen’s tennis team, were selected to the 2005 Intercollegiate TennisAssociation All-America team. Green and Wilson earned All-Americastatus after they finished a stellar junior campaign ranked No. 6in the nation. Green and Wilson captured back-to-back nationaldoubles titles at the ITA All-American Championships and the ITANational Indoor Championships last fall . They became the firstdoubles team to capture both the ITA All-American title and theNational Indoors title in the same season since 1992-93, and arethe third team to do so in NCAA history. Green and Wilson wentundefeated in fall tournament action with a 9-0 record. The pairfinished 28-8 overall this season with a 19-7 mark at the No. 1doubles spot and was 10-3 against Big Ten opponents. They wereranked No. 1 in the ITA poll from Jan. 13 to April 26 and finishedNo. 1 in the Midwest Region. The rowing team closed the 2004-05season with its annual awards banquet Sunday. Ohio State headcoach, Andy Teitelbaum, presented awards to the members of the 2005squad, recognized the team’s 11 seniors and paid tribute to themany former OSU rowers, including current assistant coach MidgeMcPhail, who were in attendance to celebrate the program’s 10thseason.
Senior Diana Albrecht (Dresden, Germany/Vitzthum Gymnasium) received honors for the 2005 Most Valuable Rower. The Golden Buckeye award, which honors the spirit and the most inspirational member, was given to senior Maggie Kathman (Lakeside Park, Ky./Notre Dame). Senior Christina Neveu (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/West Geauga) earned accolades for the Most Improved Rower. Sophomore Angela Dean (Elizabeth City, N.C./Elizabeth City State College) received the 2005 Novice of the Year award.
The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association named three Ohio State rowers to the seven annual 2005 CRCA Pocock All-America first and second teams. Seniors Diana Albrecht and Amanda Purcell received All-American first team honors, while sophomore Annabelle Fago earned second-team accolades. All three were members of the Buckeyes’ first varsity eight, which was ranked in the Top 5 the majority of the season and finished sixth at the NCAA championships.
Sophomore Jamee Juarez was named the softball team’s 2005 MostValuable Player as the Buckeyes held there annual postseasonbanquet Sunday evening in Ohio Stadium’s recruiting center. Headcoach Linda Kalafatis and her staff handed out 11 team awards andrecognized Ohio State’s five-member senior class as OSU reflectedon a season that was the school’s ninth 30-win season and saw theBuckeyes (32-17, 9-7 Big Ten) finish fourth in the Big Ten. OSU’sfive seniors, Ashley Cutcliff, Karisa Evans, Natalie Hales,Jennifer Johnson and Meghan Rowlands helped lead Ohio State to twoof the school’s three NCAA tournament appearances (2002, 2004) andwon 149 games, which ranks third on OSU’s list for wins by oneclass.
Juarez also was named the OSU Pitcher of the Year, while Evans and Megan Schwab shared the Offensive Most Valuable Player Award. Johnson took home the Defensive Player of the Year Award and Liz Caputo was named the Rookie of Year. Evans and Hales shared the Coaches Award and Hales also took home the Buckeye Spirit Award. Two Buckeyes earned academic awards as Nicole Lancaster was named the team’s Most Improved Scholar-Athlete and junior Andrea Tribuzi earned her second-consecutive Scholar-Athlete Award. The Buckeye Power Club Award, given by the strength and conditioning staff, was won by Christina Douglas, who was also named the team’s Most Improved Player.
