COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior diver Mitch Richeson was named the ESPN The Magazine At-Large Team Academic All-American of the Year and joined OSU junior fencer Jason Rogers on the first team of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America At-Large squad, announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Richeson (Greenwood, Ind.) earned first-team Academic All-America honors last year, as well, while Rogers (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned second-team Academic All-America honors as a sophomore in 2002-03.
“This is such an honor because it is recognition for all the hard work you do in athletics and in academics,” Richeson said. “They (CoSIDA) consider so many great student-athletes from a lot of sports and to be considered as the best of the best is a great honor. I have had a great year and college career and this is a great way to cap things off.”
Rogers was a second-team All-American last season and helped lead the Buckeye fencing squad to a second-place finish at the national championship. A psychology major with a 3.94 GPA, Rogers placed fifth at the 2005 national championships after posting a 25-3 record in the regular season. He was a member of the 2004 United State Olympic Team and is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in senior men’s sabre. Rogers was a first-team All-American in 2002 and 2003.
Richeson, a senior computer science and engineering major with a 3.98 GPA, received Ohio State’s male Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor last month. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier and a two-time All-American. Richeson claimed the 2005 Big Ten championship in the 1-meter springboard competition and posted a second-place finish in the 3-meter springboard. He is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has been named an OSU Scholar-Athlete all four years. At the 2005 NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minn., Richeson placed seventh and eighth in the 1- and 3-meter events, respectively, to earn All-America honors.
