Senior outfielder and team co-captain Steve Caravati batted.667 with a tournament-record 14 hits and 26 total bases to pick upMost Outstanding Player honors last week at the Big Ten tournament.He had four doubles, one triple and two home runs to help bat ineight runs and score eight times. He had a slugging percentage of1.238 and an on-base percentage of .692. Caravati, who missed 11games with a pulled hamstring early in the season, is batting .371in 45 games. He has 52 hits, 33 RBI and 33 runs scored. Caravatigot a hit to lead off the 13th inning and was replaced with a pinchrunner in the 13-inning7-3 win over Michigan to open the tournamentand then went 4-for-5 against Purdue and scored the winning run ona single to right by Wes Schirtzinger. He also made a great divingstab at the final out against the Boilermakers to strand a runnerat third base. He was a perfect 4-for-4 with his fifth home run ofthe season and drove in three runs in the first game againstMinnesota and then went 3-for-3 with four RBI inchampionship-clinching victory on Sunday Rosalind Goodwin, a seniorjumper on the women’s track and field team, added an NCAA MideastRegional championship to her impressive career resume at OhioState. The six-time Big Ten champion and three-time All-Americantopped her own school record to win the triple jump Saturday at the2005 Mideast Regional Championships in Bloomington, Ind. The nativeof Louisville, Ky., bested her teammate and fellow senior ShaylaMoore by reaching 43 feet, 10 ½ inches in her thirdjump. She buried her old mark of 43-7 ¾, set exactly oneyear ago at the 2004 Mideast Meet in Baton Rouge, La.
Goodwin heads to the NCAA outdoor championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 8-11. She will compete as the No. 7-ranked triple jumper in the nation and will be in search of the fourth All-America honor of her career.
Athletics Good Stuff
The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the2005 NCAA Mideast Regional Championships Friday and Saturday at theUniversity of Indiana’s Haugh Complex in Bloomington, Ind. The OSUwomen’s squad, which was tied for first place after day one Friday,finished fourth with 41 1/3 team points. The OSU men’s team placed18th with 13 points.
The jumps team turned in a stellar performance, featuring a regional champ and two runner-up finishers Saturday.
Seniors Rosalind Goodwin and Shayla Moore, both Big Ten champions this season, placed first and second in the triple jump with career-best lengths. Goodwin broke her own school record to finish first with a leap of 43 feet, 10 ½, while Moore placed behind Goodwin with a mark of 43-9. Goodwin snapped her previous career-best and OSU record of 43-7 ¾, which she set at the 2004 Mideast Regional to take runner up at LSU. With their Top 2 standings, Goodwin and Moore earned automatic qualifiers to the 2005 NCAA Championships June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif., as Goodwin will seek her fourth career All-American honor and Moore will compete for her third such distinction.
The Buckeyes added team points in the high jump when sophomore Jessie Stringer tied for second place. Stringer, who won the Big Ten championship in the event two weeks ago, cleared 5 feet, 9 ¼ inches to earn the automatic qualifier to the NCAA meet. In the men’s high jump, Marios Iacovou claimed third place with an outdoor-best leap of 7-1 and the men’s first automatic NCAA qualifier.
Senior Shelaine Larson added a third runner-up score for the women after she reached 200-2 in the hammer, ahead of teammate Tiffany Davis, who placed fifth at 190-4. For the men, Bryan Duby took seventh in the hammer at 205-2. All three will move on to nationals.
On the track, Aaron Fisher highlighted the day for the men, placing fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 8:46.91. For the women, sophomore Nicole Gliem also contributed team points in the 5,000-meter run, timing a career-best mark of 16:28.44 to cross the finish line in sixth place, adding three team points to the OSU total.
Baseball is 39-18 after going 4-1 to win the Big Ten tournamentas the fifth seed and enters the NCAA tournament as one of thenation’s hottest teams as winners of 19 of its last 22 games.Senior co-captain and outfielder Steve Caravati was named the MostOutstanding Player of this year’s tournament. Matt Angle, WesSchirtzinger and Dan DeLucia also were named to the Big TenAll-Tournament Team. Senior co-captain and centerfielder Mike Rabinleads all Buckeyes who have played at least 50 games with his .333batting average. He has 64 hits and has driven in 28 runs, whilescoring 43 times. Angle, a freshman rightfielder, and Eric Fryer, afreshman catcher, are batting .318, while sophomore second basemanJason Zoeller is batting .316. He paces the squad with 65 hits andhas scored a team-best 48 runs. Senior first baseman Paul Farinaccihas driven in 53 runs to lead the squad, which is batting .312.Ohio State is fielding at a .971 clip and led the Big Ten with a3.81 ERA. Freshman lefty Cory Luebke led the team with 54strikeouts, though DeLucia, a sophomore lefty, got the win in thechampionship game Sunday to improve to 5-5 on the year, has thebest ERA on the staff at 3.12. Senior righty Mike Madsen and seniorlefty Trent Luyster each are 7-3 on the year and each pitchedcomplete games to help get the Buckeyes to the championship round.The Buckeyes (39-18) are the No. 4 seed and open the tournament atOregon State (41-9) Friday at 8:05 p.m., EDT. The Beavers are thetop seed in the regional and are the No. 8 national seed headinginto the tournament. No. 2 seed Virginia (41-18) will face No. 3seed St. John’s (39-16) in the first game of the regional Friday at3:05 p.m. The fourth-ranked rowing team tied its program best witha fourth-place finish at the 2005 NCAA Championships Sunday at CSUSAquatic Center on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. The Buckeyesearned 42 points overall, seven points behind third-place Brown andthree points ahead of fifth-place Princeton. The Buckeyes’ secondvarsity eight set a program best with a fourth-place nationalfinish, the boat’s previous best was fifth in 2001. The firstvarsity eight finished with a sixth-place national finish, whilethe varsity four garnered 10th. Cal won the team championship with67 points, followed by Virginia (63) and Brown (49).
Ohio State’s fourth-place team finish ties the Buckeyes’ best in the program history. Making only their third appearance in the Grand Finals of the NCAA championships, OSU’s first varsity eight finished sixth. The Buckeyes came in with a time of 6:26.96, 1.07 seconds behind fifth-place Yale.
The second varsity eight wrapped up their season with a fourth place finish at the national championships. The Buckeyes finished in a time of 6:40.60, .9 seconds ahead of fourth-place Michigan State.
The Buckeyes’ first varsity four concluded their season with a 10th-place national finish, taking fourth in the Petite Final. The Buckeyes battled Michigan State and Yale the remainder of the race for third place. The squad could not surpass Yale finishing fourth in the Petite Final with a time of 7:31.1.
Women’s lacrosse Kelly Kremer has been named to the NationalAll-Rookie Team by women’s lacrosse.com. Additionally, ReginaOliver was named a third-team All-American by womenslacrosse.com.Kremer was the Rookie of the Year in the American LacrosseConference leading Ohio State in both points (44) and goals (38).Oliver had previously been named to the insidelacrosse.comAll-American third team. She is OSU’s first four-time ALCAll-conference selection. Senior men’s golfer Scott Anderson (GreatFalls, Mont.) was selected as a member of the Ping MidwestAll-Region team by the Golf Coaches Association of America.Anderson represented the Buckeyes at the NCAA Central Regional inSouth Bend, Ind., and narrowly missed qualifying for the NCAAchampionships as an individual. He shot 211 (70-69-72) to finishtied for ninth in the regional event, his fifth Top 10 finish ofhis final season as a Buckeye. By making the Ping All-MidwestRegion team, Anderson becomes eligible for Ping All-America honors.Anderson also was selected to the Cleveland Golf All-AmericaScholars list. To be eligible for the Cleveland Golf honor, anindividual must be a junior or senior academically and havecompeted in at least two full years at the collegiate level,participated in 70-percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have astroke average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimumcumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be ofhigh moral character and be in good standing at his college oruniversity.
